3 Easy Ways Managers Can Make Emotional Connections with Their Employees
In the morning, as soon as a boss gets to their office, they must immediately assess and know what is essential in relation to contact with their colleagues. How one’s underlings interpret his mood determines how he acts towards them. If a manager is in high spirits, the members of his team will be pleased; but if he looks strained, this may leave an effect on their morale. The same principle applies to virtual meetings; even such can perceive somebody’s energy when attending a meeting online. For that matter, sitting position among other indicators like eye contact, facial expression and tone of voice send out negative or positive energies in space.

Any type of human interaction whether through speech or non-verbal communication is not complete without communication. This means that it is important for leaders other than just the top executives understand how people are relating even without getting engrossed by social media distractions & technology noise. Soft skills still remain necessary as ever for humans living together. Furthermore, how a manager walks into a room can either formally or informally empower or disempower others around him.
?
By virtue of being one already by occupying managerial position, a leader’s formal authority has been bestowed upon them automatically. In other words, associates may automatically defer to a manager’s authority the moment they walk into the room. However, the way managers speak and act says more about their presence emotionally in terms of emotions which team members can feel and react accordingly too. Managers do not need only positional authority but personal one in dealing with subordinates at emotional levels. Leaders have three main practical ways through which they can improve their authentic connection with emotion.
?
Eye-contact: Depending on where you live within this world it could mean so many things talking about eye-contact itself. We value it because it shows assurance and truthfulness while making eye contact and also tells us if someone is happy about something else different from what he said before entering into this context. So an individual who walks into a room to address his audience, must be cautious about their eye movement as much as possible since it bears of varied micro-messages such as they are anxious or calm. Even in some parts of the world where only elders, parents and authority figures are culturally allowed to make eye contact while their subordinates look down in humility, eye contact still carries a gesture of command. Thus, before addressing an audience one should check his/her emotional baggage at the door for this could either harm or promote someone’s message unto others in the room. So bring your humanity to work because it is inclusive.

Approachability. People do not want to deal with difficult people as no one likes a hard person. It is against human nature to welcome unnecessary anxiety in someone’s life. It is not like being approachable means that an individual can be distracted or misdirected easily though. Negotiating, conversation, or teaching are all examples of situations where being approachable is very important. People would rather work with a comfortable person than a difficult one and therefore intelligence is not as important as approachability. Thus, the team members’ work ethics are affected by how their manager behaves towards them or treats them well. To prepare for this moment, managers can make themselves local and agendaless participants in the audience before they mount the podiums in front of it and talk.” (Leary et al., 2011). In other words, feel the room first before forming an opinion about the audience.

Emotional control: There is nobody who is not biased; it does not matter who you are made up of. Having biases is normal for people to have because they are human beings. People’s ability to identify and effectively manage bias sets one manager apart from another. The display of bias simply reflects your history over time -and especially from places where you live, worship, play or work at…… All individuals have experienced life’s natural events making them susceptible to bias but awareness of their biases determines how they deal with people on daily basis. As such, one should challenge his/her own assumed bias so that others emotional social political noise will never disrupt his/her ability to lead. Unfortunately, if your biases go untested they could be transferred into another environment causing you to speak or act out of your unexamined assumptions. Being an authority figure means being open enough to entertain other possibilities for viewing old issues anew. With such a mind frame, you will work in a diverse workplace without undermining others’ ways of doing things during their day today activities.

To sum up, human emotion is very powerful and can either save you from trouble or put you into it. The best way to control emotions at work is to understand that they are there (not run away from them) and use them for humane purposes so as to create a safe working place where all feel included and most importantly, a life worth living. In other words, this means that an authority figure must be capable of showing emotion when necessary since this has the power to reach out to persons whom he/she does not personally know. Some ways one can make themselves emotionally available include understanding the significance of keeping eye contact, being approachable and checking personal bias.
