The 3 Drivers of Performance: Part 3

The 3 Drivers of Performance: Part 3

In the first two parts of this series, we discussed the energy and anxiety we bring to every situation. Just like the first two, leaders need to consciously decide how they will approach the day. In this final article, we will look at how our attitude affects our outcomes.?

Attitude

This is one that I have to admit I also have a problem with. The attitude you bring to any situation, whether good or bad, sets the standard for you and those around you. There is nothing worse than being around a person with a bad attitude. The rest genuinely suffer if you have an employee or team member with a bad attitude. If you, as the leader, have a bad attitude about anything in any situation, it will transfer to others. It might even move into other areas you don't even recognize. We often don't realize it because we already have a bad attitude.

Attitude is also something that is strictly a decision. Attitude is not something that happens to us. It's something that causes us to happen to something else. It all depends on how you look at a situation and its effect on you. If you approach it with a good attitude, you have a higher possibility of success than with a bad attitude. Suppose you are leading your crew into something you have a bad attitude about. In that case, you should consider whether you're leading them in the wrong direction. See, you are the one who has been deemed to decide as the leader where you will lead and how you will lead them. A leader with a bad attitude will have a team with a bad attitude. The result is that he will hate the people with a bad attitude and bring even more of his own bad attitude to the culture.

The same rule applies if you consider what we discussed before with energy. You get back what you give. Suppose you have a bad attitude about your business. In that case, your employees will also have a bad attitude. This may lead to your employees leaving your company after some time. Still, your customers will readily recognize the atmosphere you've created. There is a feeling that customers will get the vibe from other people that something is wrong here. They'll sense it. If you've ever been in a doctor's office where you can feel the bad attitude instantly. Can you sense it when you talk to the front desk or hear the murmurs in the back? Then what do you, the customer, think??

"I don't want to be here. I don't think this business wants me here. What are they doing? Are they making mistakes? I mean, if it's this bad for them, what are they not paying attention to?"

What if you go into a doctor's office and people have a good attitude and bring that positive energy. Where they don't seem to be anxious about what's going on. That's the place you want to be. You will tell other people about that doctor. You'll talk about the staff to the doctor. You will brag about staff to other staff.?

Admit it—you know exactly what is happening in any place you walk into, whether it's a store, service center, or office. You will instantly know the attitudes of the people there. 99 times out of 100, the attitude matches that of the leader.

So again, you must decide. I'm gonna have a good attitude about this. I'm going to make this happen. Of the three things, the third one is the hardest one for me personally. When working with, consulting with, or coaching a business owner or leader, attitude sets the tone for the other three.

Several months ago, I sat down with a struggling business owner. I tried my best to help that individual. We discussed many options for their business. For about two hours, he told me why he got into this business, what it was like, what he enjoyed, and what he didn't enjoy. And honestly, the things he hated far outweighed what he could come up with that he enjoyed about the business. The owner started talking about all the issues he was having, and we discussed different options. His attitude very quickly showed through, primarily when we discussed options for improvement.

"No, it's not going to work. It never works. I already tried that," the owner said.

"Oh, you tried that. Tell me about how that went," I responded.

"Well, I knew it wasn't gonna work, and I did this and that."?

This business owner didn't take steps to make any of these options succeed because he started believing in a bad outcome from the very beginning. His bad attitude about the solution sabotaged his results.

If you start assuming you will have a bad outcome, you will get a bad result. You are the decision maker. You are the one who has already decided on a bad outcome. And as many times, it's a self-fulfilling prophecy. There was another business owner I was working with, and very quickly, it became evident that it was not an operational issue. It was not their ability to do good work; they did exceptional work. They did not market. They only attempted to sell their product in a way other than having a website with very little content. No search engine optimization. No advertising of any type. And a listing in the phone book was the extent of their sales and marketing effort. They did have a sign on their building. They did have their work vans painted with their phone number, logo, and website address. This was all that they did to attract customers.

So, I asked them about their sales and marketing plan. They didn't really have a plan, but they thought they did.

"Well, I have a website and a listing in the phone book," the owner responded.

"Okay. What about your sales and marketing plan? What type of advertising do you do?"

"Well, we tried that." He is already getting defensive.

"What did you do?"?

"We bought an ad in the newspaper. We didn't get any calls from it."

"What newspaper? What's its circulation? How many of your clients read that newspaper? What type of service do you have that you think they would be ..." I started to hit him with questions that affected the potential of his plan.

"Well, we tried advertising. It just didn't work." He interrupted loudly, so I asked whether they had ever had an in-house salesperson or someone to go out and find work, build relationships, and look for opportunities.

"Yeah, I hired a guy once."

"Tell me about him." I already knew he had guaranteed failure.

"Well, this kid was up at the high school, and he graduated. He'd work for us some in the summers, off and on, as a helper around here. He cleaned up the warehouse, vacuumed the offices, and did everything. He wasn't attending college, so we got him to be our sales..."?

"Well, what did he do to make sales?" I asked.

"I don't know. He was our sales and marketing guy. He would go out and talk to people."

"Any training? He didn't have any experience. Did you send him to any sales training? Did you have somebody that worked with him?"

"No, he was here for two or three months, and we didn't get any jobs for all the money we spent. The kid decided to go to a trade school, but we hired a sales guy, and it just didn't work out."

Again, he knew from the beginning that it wouldn't work out. He hired the wrong person and got the results he had invested in.?

If you have a bad attitude, you will have a bad outcome. If you have a good attitude, it really changes. That good attitude can help you overcome the little things you're anxious about. A good attitude can help you bring a higher level of positive energy into any situation, and attitude is a decision. It is something you can overcome. It is something you can decide, "I am going to have a good day today. This is going to be great. This is going to work out wonderfully for me, my family, my business, my legacy," and you'll be several steps further, closer to your goal with the right attitude.

I see these three drivers of performance time and time again.?

  1. Energy
  2. Anxiety
  3. Attitude

Do you see them in your own life? I see them in mine?

Control these 3 and do not let them control you, and see your business and life change.
