3 Dream Killing Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

3 Dream Killing Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

I recently celebrated my 3 year anniversary as a content creator.

In those 3 years, I've seen many people come... and sadly, I’ve also seen many people go.

There are 3 big mistakes people often make in content creation, business, and life in general.?

Here's what they are and how you can avoid making them yourself:

#1. Not being consistent

Consistency is one of the most important qualities you can possibly have.

This is true for growing a social media following, scaling your business, improving your health - pretty much anything meaningful you want to do.

As an example: A few years ago when I was in college, I was consistent with my diet and exercise, and I was consistently losing weight.

On October 30, 2018 - two months before I graduated - I had my all time lowest weigh in at 189lbs. I had lost over 170lbs from my peak weight of around 370lbs.

Then finals happened... then I started looking for a job... then I started my job... then I moved into my new apartment... and then and then and then.

Because of the above excuses, I stopped being consistent. I started regaining weight. Fast. Within just a few months, I had regained about half of the weight I had painstakingly lost over the past few years.

This is just one example of how losing your consistency will destroy your progress. A similar thing can happen to your Twitter account, your business, or your knowledge (if you’re in a fast moving field like programming).

No matter what - make sure you're quickly bouncing back from your mistakes and maintaining your consistency. It’s fine to miss one day. Don’t miss two days in a row.

#2. Making short-term plays

We've all seen those dudes who make some quick money and start selling the "get rich quick" dream while plugging affiliate links to "get rich quick" courses.

They're chasing short-term payouts, but they're missing the potential long-term plays they could be making by building a brand people respect.

The quality of your brand is critical to the success of your business. If you come on to the scene and you're obviously going after quick cash any way you can get it, your audience (and the other players in your community) will sense that and want nothing to do with you.

You’ll burn bridges you never even had the opportunity to build.

But if you can show that you're here to play the long game, you'll eventually reap big rewards.

A good reputation takes a long time to build, but it only takes one mistake to destroy. Choose your plays wisely.

#3. Chasing shiny objects

I've noticed an interesting phenomenon - when people start having success in one thing, they suddenly decide to start doing something else.

As much as we humans complain when things are hard, we also don't like it when things are easy. We get bored. We start looking for new shiny objects to go chase.

Don't get me wrong, pursuing new ideas can be an excellent way to grow yourself, your social media following, and your business.

But if you chase every single squirrel that wanders through the field of your mind, you may find yourself trying to do everything but making progress on nothing.

So, before you begin a new project, be a little intentional about it. Make sure you'll still be able to put enough effort into the work that's paying your bills, keeping your customers happy, and maintaining your following. Or, make sure you can survive that project not paying out for as long as it takes to succeed with it.

Otherwise, if and when you decide that new thing isn't worth chasing, you may come back and find your "old thing" has died.

Great article! Loved the second one about focusing on the long term. It builds nicely on the first point about consistency. Compounding is how every great business is built.
