The 3 dots...
?Sometimes some conversations make one go into a deeper reflection mode. One such casual conversation with a friend, a professor of Business Administration, led to a serious discussion about the frequent job switching in the millennial generation, the increasing feeling of dissatisfaction in the management of companies, employee management and naturally; effective and efficient leadership.
While my friend was passionately citing scholars like Mann, Stogdill, Zaccaro et.al and speaking about traits and skills of a leader, I could not help but think of leaders, bosses I loved and the ones I loathed. And then, there were some, I loved as individuals, but not so much as leaders. And there are those, with whom I could not feel any connect at the thought level, and yet their actions commanded respect as a leader. And naturally, even my own professional maturity over the years.
Looking back from where I stand today, I know each one of them has taught me something, helped me to become what I am now. And while I was listening intently to my professor friend, a smile just escaped!?
Back then I knew the theories, but perhaps I understand them better now.??
With the years of experience I have, I see these as the 3 dots that everyone (People and Organizations) needs to connect to achieve the desired results.
?1. Functional Efficiency – A combination of efficiency and effectiveness. One needs to have absolute clarity on the what, why, when and how. The SMART approach actually works here.
2. Emotional Eloquence / intelligence - cross-cultural understanding, empathy and effective interpersonal communication.
