3 different ways to hike Uganda's highest peaks

Matoke Tours Africa | DMC is always on the lookout for the most special and undiscovered places in Africa. You could say that Uganda's Rwenzori Mountains are right at the top of this list! Why? Because Margeritha Peak on Mount Stanley stands at an altitude of 5,109 meters, making it the highest point in Uganda.

Unique things about the Rwenzoris

  • Rwenzori Mountains National Park's UNESCO World Heritage status is testament to its extraordinary vegetation and diverse landscapes.
  • The Rwenzori Mountains, known as the 'Mountains of the Moon', form the largest mountain range in Africa. Stretching 120 km, this mountain chain lies on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.
  • Hiking in the Rwenzoris offers a refreshing "off the beaten track" experience that complements a safari to the often hot savannah of Queen Elizabeth National Park.

The Rwenzori's six peaks all soar above 5,000 meters and are permanently covered in ice. Hiking trails lead past numerous lakes, through heathland, a series of waterfalls, and offer jaw-dropping panoramic views over countless valleys.

How to explore the Rwenzoris

There are so many ways to explore the Rwenzoris!

  • # 1. Day hikes: These lush green foothills offer an ideal introduction to the incredible landscape of the Rwenzoris. One path to the south of the mountain range winds along the Muyambuli River through pristine rainforest. Bird lovers can spot many endemic species, such as the rare Rwenzori Turaco. This walk takes about six hours, with a delicious lunch provided along the way. Other short hikes pass through villages on the northern side of the Rwenzoris, ideal for a deep cultural interaction. What are your interests? Let us know!
  • # 2. Technical climbing: For the adventurous, Margeritha Peak offers an 8-day trek. This requires technical mountaineering experience and professional climbing equipment, which can be hired locally if needed.
  • #3. Non-technical trekking: If you're in good shape but prefer to avoid climbing equipment, the 5-day trek to Weismann Peak at 4,620 meters above sea level is highly recommended and is the most popular route.

What to expect

  • English-speaking, certified mountain guides accompany hikers, while handpicked porters carry equipment and belongings.
  • Multi-day Rwenzori treks can be demanding, mainly due to steep paths and very wet terrain.
  • On the mountain, hikers sleep in simple mountain huts and enjoy hot, tasty meals every night.
  • Acclimatization is crucial for altitude hiking and can affect anyone, regardless of fitness level. We have measures in place to help you combat it.
