3 Decades Down — An Entrepreneurial Odyssey

I was walking through the Minneapolis airport when I noticed exposed light fixtures as the place is being renovated. Thought to myself, “I used to sell those things back in my corporate days.”?
That’s when it hit me, it’s been 30 years since I had a “real” job.
I’ve been running my own business — or as I jokingly describe it — "self unemployed," for three decades?!?
Yep, it’s my business anniversary. I resigned from Cooper Industries (now part of Eaton Corporation) effective August 1, 1994, to create a career in political comedy. It worked. Then it didn’t. Suffice it to say, there have been a whole lotta adjustments along the way to keep my business rolling. Anyone who’s piloted their own enterprise understands the evolution and adaptation required to attain longevity.
Illuminated!
To be clear, I have absolutely no interest in going back to lighting fixture sales. Aside from being tediously boring, after a few years in the illumination biz, you become lighting-obsessed. These people analyze and scrutinize the light fixtures in every building they enter. Obsessing over recessed can lights and emergency exit lighting is no way to go through life! ?To that end, please keep me in mind for your next event. I deliver Agricultural insights and intelligence in an entertaining package that’ll light up your audience.
