# 3: CREATIVITY vs BIM
Being from an architectural background I have always heard that software’s or any digital tool will reduce your creativity or imagination. I have always trained myself to sketch my thoughts and then implement it on software’s, but eventually, I started developing my ideas on software like SketchUp and CAD. And as soon as I was acquainted with Revit, I started practising the same on it.
But did it affect my creativity? Does BIM affect/ restrict the creativity of Architects?
Originality and Innovation in everything that they produce is something Architects believe in. They aspire to Design creative spaces that fulfils the desired requirements of the client. Everyone is satisfied to see new and innovative designs and do not really encourage a standard prototype.
BIM is the near future of the construction industry and it has positive impacts on the productivity of this sector. It helps in simplifying the management/ handling process of construction. The efficiency of the project is impacted and the time consumed is considerably reduced. This saved time can definitely be used for designing. Complications that are very minor for large scale projects, it is completely reduced. BIM identifies difficulties at a early stage, it improves the ROI as rework and errors are eradicated. It not only recognizes faults but also opens up new liberties in design. The design of a building is one level of the project which is totally related to the designer's capability, his understanding, site conditions, etc. The most critical or creative design can be turned down into reality through BIM. Every fragment has a representation as well as detail which provides clarity to clients.
I do agree that artistic visions and approaches are unique and they keep evolving with time. Software’s and processes are mediums to generate this creativity and mould it into a defined shape. No computer or software can cast aside or has limited the creativity of the designer nor mine. In fact it has always helped me to experiment more and driven me to do better!
