3 components that can help an ADHD student
-Accommodation: Strategies that a teacher can use to make learning easier for students with ADHD
-Instruction: Strategies for teaching methods
-Intervention: Strategies to avoid disruption or distractions for the student
Accommodation
A teacher should control the physical environment. Students with ADHD work best in an environment that has minimum distraction and under close observation. The following strategies that can be helpful for a teacher in dealing with an ADHD child is available with our book offered on Amazon.
Instruction
For engaging and managing the behavior of the student with ADHD:
-From the start set clear boundaries, expectations and consequences. Enforce them consistently, E.g. “When the teacher speaks I listen”, “When someone talks I wait to finish before I talk”, “When I want to answer I raise my hand” … Read further.
Intervention
Always provide clear and precise rules. Children with ADHD need a constant reminder about the class rules. The teacher can praise the children who follow the set rules, especially the students with ADHD. Praise strategically. The students with ADHD deserve praise in even accomplishing the simplest of the tasks. Give feedback immediately after a negative behavior and use a matter of fact attitude. Keep communicating with the parents and the health professionals. Keep a non-judgmental approach within the team of parents, doctors, and teachers. Be sure to not remand the student but rather the inappropriate action. E.g. say “Talking while the teacher is talking is not something you can take praise for” instead of “You are so disruptive/rude”. Also try to use affirmative language. “We stay quiet while watching the video” or “We sit nicely on our chair while writing”. With this previous example, define exactly what “nicely” means. Children need to know, so use pictures and repetition in instructions. Rules should be clear. For more strategies offered in abundance, read here.
