3. Intangibles Exist
The Truth: They only exist in peoples’ heads. Far more is financially measurable, than not, including, for example, people’s discretionary behaviour.
Why has This Lie spread? Because measuring takes time, is tough to do, and it is far easier to have support functions, a back office etc. than for everyone to be what they truly are – ‘The Business’.
It’s not our fault – It takes great bravery to stand out from the crowd on this one. Many people still think it’s somehow not proper to talk about ‘money’ and this particular lie has embedded itself as an absolute truth – how ironic that Intangibles have become so real!
An Alternative – Start from the opposite extreme than most people and believe that everything is measurable. When someone challenges this, ask them to prove it! And if anyone still argues for intangibles then pay them with intangible money.
