Are you loving all these bank holidays or are the 4 day weeks feeling like a squeeze?


Three of the biggest challenges I see in physical retail right now:

  1. Not enough retailers are giving a different experience to the products that can be bought online
  2. The customer is the expert, often so much research is done online before purchasing, it’s hard for staff to be the experts
  3. Staffing challenges - from budget cuts, increasingly hard to recruit and lack of investment in training


Three things you can do to address this:

  1. Create experiences to surprise and engage customers that build loyalty and social sharing opportunities
  2. Invest in training staff and give them the tools to better serve customers in the moment
  3. Use technology to support staff in-store not replace them so they spend more time with customers and offer an elevated experience


Physical retail is still hugely important and in many categories outweighs digital sales, yet it often falls to the bottom of the list. Having worked at Selfridges for so many years the store experience is ingrained in me. There is a huge opportunity to integrate digital solutions to better serve customers in-store, and I don’t mean a self-serve ipad! ;) Customers crave human interaction, they go into a store for a reason - to touch, feel, try on and engage.

A coaching client said I was the Marie Kondo of business at our workshop recently. We had a real laugh and created some new mantras for him to live by:
