2nd Edition: The James Brand
In our second edition of A Commitment to Excellence, I highlight a boutique knife and tool company based in Portland, Oregon.??The James Brand was founded in 2012 by Ryan Coulter, who previously designed for Burton and Nike.??He held the title Entrepreneur in Residence at Nike (yes please) for two years before launching his new company.??There is no James at the company; the name comes from a blend of three excellent and sleek James’ in history, James Bond, James Dean, and 18th-century explorer James Cook.??
The James Brand is rooted in creating minimalist, beautifully designed, and functional pocket knives and everyday carry items.??The James Brand is committed to making fewer items at a higher quality.??Each item is a beautiful blend of elegance, sleekness, and, most significantly, well-engineered to serve a purpose for the end user. There are no frills or unnecessary add-ons to their products. A sign of excellence is a product that does the job it was designed to do.??This is true in the brand's ethos and throughout the product design.??“We want The James Brand to be there as this stable force that is a reflection of the things that people need and want,” said Ryan in an interview with Vanish.??For example, the Elko, the smallest knife in their collection, is perfect for adding to a key ring with a functional blade (see the Swiss Army knife for a blade that is too small for any actual use).??As a bonus, the designers added a small screwdriver to the top of the knife to tighten a loose screw or open a cold drink.?
Finally, the company has built a team of ambassadors to join the James Brand.??Each individual pushes the boundaries of excellence in their field, from climbing to photography, surfing, cooking, and skateboarding.??I commend them for their commitment to supporting movers and shakers who represent the brand's values.???

1 年Great article, Ian Galbraith! I can think of a 4th James in our life who, though is quite young, is excellent in his own way! ??
