Present and Past: Legal History as a Master of Law in Action

Call for Papers

The Central and Eastern European Legal History Conference, first organised in autumn 2019 by the Faculty of Law of the University of Vienna, will be held this year in Budapest, at the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences of Pázmány Péter Catholic University. Now that the pandemic has subsided, we want to contribute to making this meeting a tradition.

Legal history research, the in-depth study of the history of an era, a legal system or a legal institution, can express the personal interest and passionate curiosity of the legal historian. Many historians and legal historians, however, are not only driven by a desire to learn more about the past, but also by a desire to better understand the developmental processes and contexts of the present. And finally, there are those who are convinced that a deeper knowledge of the past will help them not only to understand the present but also to shape the legal order, whether they do so as legislators, as practitioners or as legal scholars.

At the 2nd Central and Eastern European Legal History Conference, we want to examine how legal history, its knowledge or its scientific research has become, and continues to be, a master teacher for practitioners of the existing legal order, and how the past becomes a source of inspiration for the legal practitioners of today. Therefore, we are primarily looking for proposals on topics that demonstrate the impact of the cultivation of legal history, the knowledge and lessons derived from it, on the law in force, legislation, the application of law and legal problem-solving, either through examples from the past or from the present. Topics related to telecommunications, press, media and film law, competition and consumer policy will be prioritised.

Abstracts of up to 2,500 characters in length, indicating the author and his/her institutional affiliation, should be sent not later than 31 March 2023 to the following e-mail address: [email protected]. More information will be available soon at bit.ly/ceelhc2023.
