"The Upbringing that Encircles Me" - 2nd Book Teaser
Do you have a story to share?
We all do...
How many of us put our life story into words? How many of us share the events that shaped us? Discuss our upbringing? Our dreams?
What about giving advice or talking about personal and professional growth? To me, this is a must.
The Upbringing that Encircles Me: A Memoir does all this for me. I just updated the eBook version and it was published in December 2018. Already, events occurred that changed my life, changed my attitude, changed my philosophy...
Book teaser one was shared here on Linkedin on October 12, 2018-the very day an event occurred that changed my life, and I just realized this as I am sharing book teaser 2! Six months to the day exactly. My outlook is totally different. What is important to me, what my focus is, how I live my life-all has changed.
Introduction
I think we do a huge disservice to our children when we ‘force’ certain values and morals on them. Everyone is an individual, and each individual needs to grow and learn at their own rate. I guide my kids, nudge them, but ultimately, they will become who they are meant to be.
I was raised with Catholic/Protestant parents. My father agreed the children would be raised Catholic so that he and my mom could get married in the Catholic church. I had my first communion, my confirmation, and went to church on Sundays with my mom and brother.
When I turned 18, I told my mom while I loved and respected her, I could not go to church with her anymore, except for the occasional Christmas service. Too much I did not agree with in the Catholic church...
I returned to community college, taking courses at night as a business major while working full-time. I did this for a year before deciding retail as a career was not for me. I hated the hours, working weekends, nights, and holiday time was crazy! I wanted a 9-5 job and so worked part-time in Customer Service and went to community college full-time...
So, senior year at Albany, I loved the campus which was bigger, more alive, and the surrounding area had much to offer. I had to choose a minor as it was required, so I chose English and I did this because I had the most credits to put towards it. I had to spend an extra summer taking three courses in English to graduate so I could begin the fall semester in the Master’s of Social Work program. I remember I took Native American Literature, Women’s Literature, and 18th and 19th Century Literature. I did not read for pleasure once that summer!
I absolutely loved graduate school! I had amazing classmates, and what I loved was the diversity. I had wonderful professors, I loved my course work, and I made some great friends. I had two good internships in school social work and community social work.
Two years later, I graduated and had my first job as a therapist in a clinic that worked with children and families in Plattsburgh, New York. The job paid extremely well for the time; 1997. I had more money than I knew what to do with and had I been smarter about it, I would have saved more of it. But I was single with a boyfriend, had a new car, rented an apartment, and had nice neighbors, but I was twenty-seven. What did I know?
I worked as a therapist for a year and a half and was ready for a new challenge as the clinic was very money oriented and all about scheduling appointments, my mindset was not structured that way. I moved to Burlington, Vermont which was more my speed as a city. I loved the vibe, the people, the nature, the food, the area in general...
At her funeral, which was in New York state as she wanted to be buried next to her husband, shared plot; I was supposed to read a poem. I chose one, but the day of, I could not do it. I was devastated by her death and grief enveloped me. My brother ended up reading the poem. I still think of her and treasure the memories I have of her...
