In this video extract from the AMB Animation Real Animator Training library you are treated to a section of the 5th part of the traditional animation course on how to animate dialogue. There is an overview of the entire process that was covered in the previous four lectures as well as some hints on basic mouth shape theory for animating lip sync.
The major aspect to consider when animating dialogue no matter whatever medium is that your character is expressing something from within externally. This means there has to be some substance and context to the dialogue. Basically your character must have emotional content and express it to the audience.
Mouthing shapes to sounds is not a difficult thing to do and it simply will not cut it if you are attempting to animate anything that can be considered competent or even average. So think about the dialogue, think about it in the context of the character you are animating and start to create an illusion of life as opposed to an illusion of movement.
