Monday?

??We started the week with the impressive news that the Canadian government has made amendments to the country’s Competition Act, a law regulating trade, mergers and marketing practices in the country, in a bid to reduce greenwashing and better manage environmental claims, including those from fashion and textile firms.

??We also reported that Cotton made in Africa (CmiA) has reportedly made significant progress in its bid to pursue gender justice and redress imbalances for women involved in cotton production.

Highlighting the systemic disadvantages faced by female farmers in the cotton supply chain, a recent study from the CmiA shows women who take part in its initiative are able to serve as role models, offer other female farmers someone to turn to, and are able to establish co-operatives together with other women to increase both their autonomy and their financial independence by creating new sources of income.

Tuesday

??On Tuesday, we disclosed that US retailer 塔吉特百货 is launching a scheme that allows customers to drop off used denim clothing in exchange for a 20% discount on new denim apparel.

The retailer says the event will run from 4-10 August in its almost 2,000 stores nationwide and is in response to growing consumer interest in sustainability in the garment industry.

??We also reported that textile innovator SPINNOVA? is gearing up for the commercial launch of its fibre from leather waste, which can be used to make footwear, garments and leather accessories without the use of potentially hazardous chemicals.

The Finnish firm has signed a ‘Letter of Intent’ for its Respin company, a 50/50 joint venture with leather supplier Ecco and its partner KT Trading AG. , in which both parties have committed to scaling up operations.

Wednesday?

??On Wednesday we brought the news that UK retailer John Lewis & Partners has partnered with luxury goods reseller Sign of the Times to launch its first range of ‘pre-loved’ designer handbags and accessories.

The new online range will build on the current offering of second-hand goods from a variety of suppliers, albeit with a new focus on designer pieces from brands such as Chanel, Christian Dior, Saint Laurent and Gucci.

??We also reported that Pakistan’s largest vertically integrated denim company, Soorty Enterprises Pvt. Ltd. has had its greenhouse gas reduction targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative .

The denim giant has committed to reducing absolute Scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions by 54.6% by 2033 from a 2021 base year.

Thursday

??On Thursday we disclosed that the Lenzing Group has joined Austrian non-profit RTDS Group to lead the CELLFIL project, which has been set up to promote the scaling-up of bio-based, lyocell filaments across the textile and clothing industries.

The €6.9 million project, which is funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme, includes 13 other partners from across eight other countries.

??We also revealed that a report by the Fashion Revolution initiative has urged major fashion brands to invest at least 2% of their revenue into a ‘fair transition’ away from fossil fuels to power their supply chains.

The report claims the fashion industry is falling short of climate investments, not working fast enough to cut fossil fuel use, and generally “lagging significantly” in achieving climate targets and reducing emissions.

Friday

??Today we reported that Germany has experienced a significant plunge in clothing and footwear imports in 2023 with the short-fall offset by a surge in purchases from non-European fast fashion platforms such as Shein and Temu, new research suggests.

Germany’s Textile, Shoes and Leather Goods Trade Association (BTE) estimates that in 2023, German consumers bought around one billion fashion items from the Chinese e-commerce giants.

??Finally, we delivered the interesting news that sportswear giant 阿迪达斯 is attempting to close down sourcing routes for its goods that are manufactured in China and then exported directly to the United States.

This change of tack, according to its CEO Bj?rn Gulden, is currently underway at the company and was revealed by the CEO when speaking to analysts in an investment call this week to discuss the brand's Q2 results.
