This Edition's Ingredients
Let's take a look at this article's ripe ingredients to see what's coming up.
So let's dive into why Odoo is the platform of choice for many.
What Is Odoo?
Odoo ERP is an 'Enterprise Resourcing Planning' software tool used across your company for managing operations and processes
All Your Business On One Platform - Simple, Efficient, Yet Affordable
Picture this...
'Imagine a vast collection of business apps at your disposal. Got something to improve, well there is an app for that.?Each app simplifies a process and empowers more people. Imagine the impact that everyone gets within your business when each person has the right tool'
Odoo, in recent years, has become a figure point in the ERP industry.
My verdict? Well, it might be biased, but it's honestly hard not to be.
"It's the friend you never knew you needed. Increased automation efficiency ans streamlining at a small cost with maximum effect across your business. In terms of investment, you can't get more bang for your buck."
Not bad, eh, for reducing your overall business spend.
The History of Odoo
Odoo was first formed in 2005 by this man, Fabien Pinckaers. A true pioneer when it comes to the ERP world. Formerly known as TinyERP & OpenERP (another story for another day), building from the ground up has not been a straightforward journey but one that has shown true grit and determination, paying off in the long run.
The company was created in Belgium with the ultimate goal of providing businesses with a flexible and, most importantly, affordable ERP platform that would not rinse and destroy budgets. Over the last 19 years, Odoo has now become one of the leading vendor providers with offices and partners situated around the globe, servicing thousands of customers.
To put it into context, Odoo has over 12 million users worldwide, translated into over 30 languages and over 40,000 apps in the store, 5,000 partners globally and has been ranked as a top ERP provide by the likes of Gartner and Forrester.
Fabien Pinckaers - CEO
Fabien is the founder and chief visionary behind Odoo. He loves to keep his hands full by participating in the development of the platform, Marketing and Customer Experience strategies.
Antony Lesuisse - CTO
Anthony is one of the lucky people in life who can say he loves what he does. He oversees 200+ in-house developers and looks after the community of 2,000 Odoo developers.
Alessandro Mazzocchetti - CFO
Alessandro, with his multiyear international experience, helps Odoo easily understand the numbers and how to improve them. He is determined to drive success and deliver professional acumen to bring Odoo to the next level; responsible for Finance, Legal matters and HR.
Sébastien Bruyr - CCO
His everyday target is to provide the right and easiest solution across over 600+ new implementations a year as the head of Direct and Indirect Channel at Odoo.
And that is growing. Now that is pretty incredible.
"We beileve that every business deserves the best software to manage their operations. We work hard every day to create a product that is powerful, flexiable, and easy to use, so that our customers can actually focsu on what they do best, which is focusing on running their business."
Fabien Pinckaers - CEO & Founder at Odoo
If you would like to learn more about the history of Odoo and the challenges that have been faced, I would recommend taking a look at the 'Planet Odoo Podcast' - available on all Odoo audio platforms.
What Apps Do Odoo Have?
An app for every need, that's what. It is pretty simple. The beauty of it.
From Sales and Human Resources to Website, Odoo offers an entire full-suite of applications to suit all your business requirements. Saving you thousands so that you can optimise maximum value and ROI. Take a look at how you can streamline your operations.?
Let's take a look at the apps currently on offer:
Finance
Sales
Websites
Marketing
Inventory & MRP
Human Resources
Services
Productivity
Odoo features/apps, or as they call them 'Modules', give each business an extensive range of choices across possible features. One price for all apps means you can experiment and scale without hassle.
Let's also not forget that Odoo's suite works together seamlessly, eliminating the need for loads of manual data entry.
It's also important to mention the Odoo App Store?contains over 42,000 possible apps that you can use to further integrate across your Odoo environment. One of the largest in the world. Littered with apps that have been built by both Odoo community members and partners to add to the existing functionality offered out of box.
Why ERPs Are Important
Talking from an agnostic point of view, any business software should cover all your complex and simple needs without being a hassle. Both an enjoyable and smooth experience designed with seamless adoption
In Odoo's eyes...
"We think business software should complex needs without being complicated. Our mission is to provide software that is intuitive, full-featured, tightly integrated, effortless to upgrade, all while running smoothly for every business, every user."
Also, think about your personnel. Managers have access to updated data, allowing them to make smarter decisions without fault. Your engineers?have full bandwidth to log timesheets, reduce down admin tasks and keep up to date with company culture.?Your accounting team, have one unified platform. Your HR reps have unrestricted access to manage sensitive information and deal with difficult company situations.
The world has changed. ERPs are all the rage these days. But...
Why is?NOW?the time?YOU?should invest in one?
If you want to learn more about the importance of ERPs - I would suggest you read my first article of 2024, focusing on the statement 'Will It Be The Best Year Yet For Odoo?':
Why Odoo Is The Smart Choice
So, why is Odoo a popular choice across various sizes of businesses and industries? Let's take a look at it in further depth.
Did you know in a recent survey by Statistica that companies in the UK spent around £3 billion each year, just alone in software running their business? Expected to rise to £4 billion by 2024. This year!
Not to mention that in a recent report, the average global budget for an ERP implementation was $9,000. When you additionally factor in how many users that could be in your system. For larger companies, it could range from anywhere between $150,000 and $750,000 - even more in some cases, depending on users and complexities.
With SMBs/Mid-Market companies and larger enterprises as well, rising costs and implementation prices are a constant worry. Odoo leaves businesses in a sweet spot.
Given that Odoo is also super customisable following a 'modular approach', that means businesses can choose what modules they need and configure them. Allowing them to tailor their unique requirements and avoid paying for features that they are not going to need or use. We'll get into pricing in a little more depth later on.
Is Odoo Worth Investing In?
So, that is the magic question, I suppose.
Why Odoo?
With 2023 being a crucial year for Fabien Pinckaers'?Odoo?and ERPs, 2024 looks to pack a punch. From?Odoo marketing initiatives,?possible more extensive strategic relationships?and the?importance of ERPs?growing more than ever, could it be Odoo's biggest year yet?
As Fabien expressed himself in the Odoo Experience 2023 Opening Keynote, trying to explain to his children?'it's not easy'.
Let's imagine a mechanic. That's right, a mechanic.???
Many businesses are stuck in old-fashioned ways. Many organisations can become frustrated by not having the right tools in order to operate correctly. Lots of companies are still either working off Excel sheets or paper.
In a paperless world!
"If we have good tools, we are able to do a better job. Why? Because we spend 1/3 of our time at work. We want to contribute to our company and our society."
Fabien speaks on why tools are essential.
Odoo is not software for management or software for a management team. It is a software for the people. For the accountant, project manager or recruiter.
Odoo 17
Since Odoo 17 was announced in November 2023 at Odoo Experience, it has been a huge boost for both new and existing customers.
Well, I don't think there is any better place to start than Odoo CEO - Fabien's keynotes.
With Odoo 17 officially announced, we saw further features being implemented into the new version along with additional upgrades across existing modules. Not to mention two big announcements, with one focusing on Odoo's brand-new branding implemented company-wide and industry-focused environments?also taking centre stage.
Not to mention that Odoo aims to recruit 1500 employees this year, taking the number well over 3000 employees. Fabien himself joked that?'he sometimes feels like a real-estate agency'?opening up new offices everywhere globally.
Before we even dive into anything. I want you to picture the above.
'Help People Do?More In Less Time'??
For those who attended my Gravitai talk at OXP, I spoke about the importance of saving time within Odoo. As a CEO, it has saved me up to?40 hours per month?as a CEO. Critical time. This, for me, was the statement of the event. We often forget daily the rewards we reap with Odoo.
In a nutshell. It allows us to operate as we should.
This year's keynote started with the concept of?'User Friendly'.?
But isn't Odoo already user-friendly, William??
Well, yes, completely... but there is always room for improvement. It's super crucial for Odoo, and employees, accountants, partners, and project managers should always work to be more efficient!
Not to mention that Odoo is known for being ahead regarding performance and usability. We will discuss more on that later.
Let's first compare from a visual example.
Fabien admitting to himself...
"It was quite hard for me to let go of the purple background, but it was important every icon is more?recognisable,?readability?is better, and so our designers reviewed every single application of Odoo to ensure it?gets much?cleaner?and?fresher."
Fabien Pinckaers?- CEO?(on Odoo 17's new interface)
For the night owls that also prefer to work in dark mode, the system still remains a super clean and sophisticated look as the interface is switched by the click of a button.
From Kanban views, Sales, inventory - the lot. We will see an improved interface for Odoo 17. Even down to the PX size of the font increasing from?13 PX - 14 PX?for comfortability. In addition to this, no space has even been lost across the interface.
Notably, the drag-and-drop interface remains.?Search has also been upgraded with filters, groups and search elements now appearing in one unified click. Again, you might notice a theme reoccurring here, but it is all to limit space and keep the interface clean.
Love it. Quite cool. A game changer, really.

Odoo Release Notes
Documentation is key within any business, and Odoo makes no exception in providing regular updates across release notes with changing features and improvements. You can check out my articles on the latest Odoo 17 Release Notes below.
The Open Source Framework, Client And More
One of the most obvious reasons that Odoo has become popular is due to the open-source framework. This means that the platform is free to use, modify and distribute. Making it a super affordable choice for SMEs that might not have big budgets compared to enterprise organisations.
I think at this point; it is important that we refer back to the points that the Odoo CTO mentioned during the keynote at Odoo Experience 2023.
Odoo CTO Antony Lesuisse took to the stage briefly to give an insight into the framework of Odoo for all the techies in the crowd.
So, talking about everything performance when it comes to Odoo. Performance and working with a system on a daily basis is the difference between it feeling?'bloated'?and a software that looks?'snappy and quick'?he stated.
This year, they had the opportunity to run through the client of Odoo (what is running inside of the browser), cleaning up code and increasing performance
Even with the increase in functionality and apps, the code has been reduced.
This, of course, differs across each module, but it is incredible to see.
And yes, it is very, very quick.
Not to mention that Odoo is also looking at the very long term in regards to scalability with the platform. Something that should not be neglected, of course. Covered in the Keynote, take a look at how CTO Antony Lesuisse discusses the back end of Odoo supporting 5,000 users compared to 50,000!
That is right, you heard me correctly, 50,000.
Let's not take?Odoo.sh?out of the picture as well. As the go-to for hosting your Odoo environment, the upgrades are much anticipated, including?5-year version?support.
If you want to take a look at all the announcements, you can?watch back the first keynote from Fabien here to dive deeper into Odoo 17.??

Ricoh and Odoo's Strategic Partnership is one of mutual interest and benefit. With Ricoh's experience in hardware and software technologies and Odoo's expertise in business software, it only made sense to collaborate as we are driven by the same goal - building success with technology tools we love."

Learning Odoo
One of the major benefits that Odoo portrays is the documentation when it comes to learning. There are some ways you can get started if you are new to the ecosystem. While many Odoo Partners also offer additional training schemes, here below are some simple ways to get started.
Tutorials
I would recommend looking at Odoo's slides across their learning portal which you can find here first.

I can't write this article without giving a thumbs up to the Odoo Community.?
With both a large and active community across LinkedIn.
