Sony Acquires 3D Animation Company Beyond Sports to Offer a Complete Sports Metaverse Experience
It does not come as a surprise to see Sony jumping on the Metaverse hype along with other big major players in the industry. Sony has recently acquired “Beyond Sports”, a company that specializes in using real-world data to produce 3D animation. ?
With this new acquisition, Sony is making a foray into the sports metaverse world.?It will allow the company to produce real-time, content relating to basketball, baseball, tennis, and football matches. The sports industry has become an important element worldwide and an important growth engine for many industries. Digitalization of the sports industry is particularly important, and the metaverse is the best way to digitally realize the sports industry, not only to simulate many new scenarios but also to implant economic models. As the metaverse market continues to expand, it has become a major trend for various industries to enter it and compete for the market, the sports industry is no exception. As sports IPs are in a bottleneck period, they need the metaverse to bring in young users.?
Hawk-Eye Innovations is another company owned by Sony which enables the company to produce, content relating to basketball, baseball, tennis, and football matches.?
Sony may also be able to offer metaverse matches using its line of Playstation consoles. The company is developing a virtual reality (VR) headset that is confirmed to be set for release in February 2023 and could be used to enjoy metaverse experiences in an immersive way. Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida has also stated that Sony’s “first priority is to create a metaverse around entertainment,” using all of the tools that the brand has for this purpose.
Sony combined with VR, AR, and other technologies will create a metaverse and bring new experiences.
