A Short Story about Weight Loss, Wine and WebMD

“You wanna lose weight?” She said putting down her wine glass in order to take another bite of her cake “Then get up early and go for a walk before breakfast. Half an hour a day will make all the difference”

?I looked down at how my belly was lifting my t-shirt away from my belt line allowing a cold breeze onto the fleshy underside of my gut. Along the huge cream coloured sofa sat my wife Keren alternating attention between wine, cake and cellphone. On the coffee table in front of us was a Lidl Deluxe chocolate cake, two half full wine glasses and a bottle of Baileys waiting to be poured.

?Ever since she had started subscribing to WebMD Karen had become an expert on any condition that might affect me from cancer to depression and now obesity.

?“Ok” I said “I’ll start tomorrow. Now give me another piece of cake”

?I got up at 5:30am in the dark and struggled into the clothes I’d laid out the evening before. I fed the crying cat and made my way out into the damp, orange night. Our little end of terrace house was dark behind me.

?Striding out I wondered how far I would need to walk to fill up my thirty minutes and how many calories I might burn this morning and what would I do if I needed to pee. The illuminated box of the M2 bus wheezed its way up the hill towards the station, crashing over the pothole that the council had yet to repair.

?The cool air on my face contrasted with the heat from the explosion behind me. The shockwave sent me scratching along the tarmac. I saw only flames, and smoking silhouettes where our house had once stood. 28 more minutes walking.
