AI Revolution: U.S. Sets Course for Global Leadership in Trustworthy Tech
“Arguments about existential risk from AI should not detract from the necessity of addressing existing risks of AI. Nor should arguments about existential risk from AI crowd out the consideration of opportunities that benefit society."
These are powerful words from the first official report of the US National Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee (NAIAC)
The United States is at a pivotal moment with the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI), widely used in both public and private sectors. The National Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee (NAIAC) was established to guide the nation in becoming a global leader in ethical and inclusive AI practices. First convened in May 2022, the NAIAC comprises 26 experts from various fields like academia, industry, and civil society, offering their expertise to advise the President and the White House National AI Initiative Office.
This first official report from NAIAC, marking one year into their three-year term, addresses four key themes:
It outlines 14 objectives and 24 actionable recommendations, covering aspects like bolstering AI leadership, funding, establishing research initiatives, and workforce training. The aim is to ensure AI is developed and used safely and responsibly, promoting innovation and opportunity.
Looking ahead, the report emphasizes the continued role of NAIAC in maintaining the U.S.'s position as a frontrunner in trustworthy AI, setting the tone for its use and governance aligned with democratic values and civil liberties.

When Kevin Benedict had interviewed me a few months ago about the "Future of Generative AI" I remember saying in my concluding remarks:

And well, the "immediate" is already here, as Sam Altman demonstrated last week when he demonstrated the ability to provide that "context" within ChatGPT to create your own versions of ChatGPT. And he did that without writing a single line of code.
He quickly created a "Startup Mentor" providing advice to start ups leveraging ChatGPT but within a specific contextual framework (in this case the massive LLM layered on with specific mentoring advice given by Altman in the past).
This can unleash a whole new wave of creativity as entrepreneurs harness the power of LLM to create own versions (in my interview the idea for using ChatGPT to seek advice on home maintenance issues, providing the homeowner with valuable information and helping them approach contractors more confidently had come up. Now someone can create a "HomeRepair Buddy" version of GPT which does just that.
All this led up to the announcement about OpenAI’s GPT Store, which will be the platform on which these GPTs will be distributed and, eventually, monetized:

Later this month, we’re launching the GPT Store, featuring creations by verified builders. Once in the store, GPTs become searchable and may climb the leaderboards. We will also spotlight the most useful and delightful GPTs we come across in categories like productivity, education, and “just for fun”. ?? Google DeepMind has made a groundbreaking advancement in weather forecasting with its AI model, GraphCast. Running on just a desktop computer, this machine-learning model outperforms existing methods, offering precise global weather predictions in under a minute.
?? Unlike traditional models that rely on supercomputers, GraphCast uses past and current weather data to forecast future conditions. Its speed and accuracy are a significant leap forward, making it a leader among both conventional and AI weather prediction tools.
?? This innovation could greatly reduce the financial and energy costs associated with weather forecasting. While still experimental, GraphCast and similar AI models hold immense potential for improving short-term weather predictions like rainfall, and could complement existing methods.
?? The technology, however, still faces challenges. Understanding AI decision-making processes remains complex, and there's ongoing work to address potential biases and energy consumption during training.
