255,000 New Pilots Needed in Next 10 Years

This week at the Paris Airshow 2017 Canadian Flight simulator and training service provider CAE released its first Airline Pilot Training Demand Outlook. According to the report the world’s airlines will need 255,000 new airline pilots over the next 10 years.
Rapid fleet expansion and high pilot retirement rates create a further need to develop 180,000 first officers into new airline captains, more than in any previous decade. These numbers mean that over 50% of the pilots who will fly the world’s commercial aircraft in 10 years have not yet started to train.
CAE’s report states that this record demand will challenge current pilot-recruitment channels and development programs. In turn, new and innovative pilot career pathways and training systems will be required to meet the industry’s crewing needs and ever-evolving safety standards.
However, this is going to have an effect on the private jet market too. I was just speaking to a friend in Rome, Italy today and he manages 7 jets and has just lost three First Officers, who went off to fly Boeing B737-800s with Ryanair. Pilots seem to gravitate towards larger aircraft…
Having flown both private jets and for the airlines a 2 week on/ 2 week off roster flying private jets offers a better lifestyle than any airline can give you, providing it is paid well.
Once graduating from flight school, $20,000 will land you a type rating on an Airbus 320 or Boeing B737NG and get you a job with easyjet or Ryanair (if you pass their pilot selection process). To get a rating on a private jet will cost a lot more money and finding a job will be more difficult. When airlines recruit they usually look for 10-20 pilots and sometimes more, so the odds of being hired are higher. In the private jet world, it is a lot more difficult and the good outfits hire through word of mouth. Basically it is better off for a pilot to invest in training on an airliner.
When we sell a private jet to someone we also offer to manage the aircraft for them. We recruit the pilots through our network and offer a very good remuneration package. We want to guarantee two things for the jet owner:
1. Top quality pilots
2. Pilots that stay
Our philosophy is the private jet needs to stay private and to do this your pilots need to stay with you a long time and not be jumping ship every 12 months.

7 年That will be a great opportunity I have a passion for being a pilot. Its my dream but unfortunately due to my background I can't afford to pay for my training.

7 年Fabrizio I agree when the first officer has experience. Usually what happens is the FO is gaining his/her experience and building flight time while learning about all the parts of aviation that is not taught in school. Please do not misinterpret what I am saying because as a pilot I do believe the starting pay is low for the responsibility. If the training matched the real world flying requirements better than the pilots could add more value and require more pay.

7 年What is a good starting pay for an inexperienced pilot? That is the question that needs ask. The bigger issue in my option is the airlines going broke every ten years and the layoffs and loss of pensions. Stable jobs means more than a great starting pay. Pay comes with experience.
