The 25,000 Voices Behind the FTC’s Noncompete Ban

When the Federal Trade Commission’s near-total ban on noncompete clauses came down last week, Bloomberg’s Matt Boyle quickly scoured his social networks to see what folks were saying.?

He soon came across a story that highlighted how noncompetes can unduly hinder those just starting out in the world of work — and yes, before you ask, he does see the value of them for senior executives (who can afford lawyers).?

But he found it striking that when the FTC solicited public comments on noncompetes over the past year, more than 25,000 of the 26,000-plus responses came out in favor of the ban, according to the commission. Here are some.?

I approve of this non-compete ban. I believe the salary cap should be higher though. We need to stop putting corporations before people. Non-competes are critical for startups though, so someone can't steal and idea and take it to the market first. We need to find a good middle ground for that. Equally important are banning non-disparagements. This is one where it solely benefits the corporations, and their poor behaviors continue. If these companies are worried about their reputation, then they should be behaving better. Forcing a person into silence through the non-disparagement clause in their employment agreement - it's both sad and appalling. Who has the money to fight that or risk their reputation by going to court to bring justice to the "isms" they faced? Certainly not the majority of workers. #EndNonDisparagement
