25 years of reducing world poverty

• This is the introduction to a series of short articles on the progress the world has made in the last 25 years on reducing extreme poverty, and particularly the role of the UK in that.
• It is also about the setbacks we are seeing right now as a result of the global COVID pandemic, war in Ukraine and its impact on food and fuel prices, and the climate emergency.
• And it looks ahead to what the UK government should be doing to restore its position as a world leader on global development. ?

I have worked in various parts of the international development sector over the last 25 years.?I worked in the Department for International Development for its first ten years. I also worked in No 10 and advised Prime Minister Tony Blair on the Gleneagles G8 Summit on Africa, climate and development.?I then worked for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for 7 years, on policy and advocacy, as Deputy Director, Global Development, then Director, Africa. For the last eight years, I was Chief Executive of CARE International UK, one of the largest international development and humanitarian agencies, working on 100 countries around the world and a member of the Disasters Emergency Committee.
