25 years of reducing world poverty

  • This is the introduction to a series of short articles on the progress the world has made in the last 25 years on reducing extreme poverty, and particularly the role of the UK in that.
  • It is also about the setbacks we are seeing right now as a result of the global COVID pandemic, war in Ukraine and its impact on food and fuel prices, and the climate emergency.
  • And it looks ahead to what the UK government should be doing to restore its position as a world leader on global development. ?

I have worked in various parts of the international development sector over the last 25 years.?I worked in the Department for International Development for its first ten years. I also worked in No 10 and advised Prime Minister Tony Blair on the Gleneagles G8 Summit on Africa, climate and development.?I then worked for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for 7 years, on policy and advocacy, as Deputy Director, Global Development, then Director, Africa. For the last eight years, I was Chief Executive of CARE International UK, one of the largest international development and humanitarian agencies, working on 100 countries around the world and a member of the Disasters Emergency Committee.

Thanks for bringing sober truths and optimism, Laurie. Of course, we know that even in India, where millions have risen out of extreme poverty, environmental, health, and financial catastrophes ping pong people in and out of poverty. We still need systemic change to secure progress for all.

Very much look forward to these articles Laurie Lee. I too have been 25 years (although closer to 30) in similar areas and would love to read and engage with your thoughts and those of others in this topic.

Love this Laurie. It’s great to hear your thoughts on the world given the amazing insights you’ve accessed over the years. Looking forward to the coming sound bites.
