Over the last weekend while cleaning one of my drawers I found these, These are 35mm film negative's from one of my most memorable trips.... these 170 images captured in 10 film rolls over 35 days brought several memories, and thought would share them with you considering that this trip was taken 25 years ago between June and Aug 1998.
Twenty-five years ago, as I bid farewell to my final year thesis and embarked on a new chapter in life, a group of intrepid friends Nirav Kothary Vatsal Bhatt, PhD Capt Alap Desai (Veteran) and I set out on an awe-inspiring motorcycle journey from Ahmedabad to Khardung La, then the highest motorable road/pass in the world at an altitude of 5,359?m (17,582?ft) in the majestic Himalayas.
This extraordinary trip, organized under the umbrella of Youth Hostels Association of India , brought together nine people from diverse backgrounds, united by a shared passion for exploration and the freedom of the open road.?
One of my biggest motivations for joining this expedition was to get an opportunity to do lots of photography and travel 4000kms on a motorbike with friends exploring parts of India that I had never been to..
??? The group, comprising individuals with diverse experiences, professions, and ages, embarked on this epic adventure aboard their iconic motorbikes from Royal enfield india , Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt. Ltd. Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. also probably the first time that a Kinetic Honda attempted such a journey??? The camaraderie and sense of anticipation were palpable as we set off on a two-way highway, our destination, Khardung La, shrouded in the mystique of the majestic Himalayas. ???
Through bustling cities and serene countryside, our expedition unveiled the diverse tapestry of India's cultural landscape. We ventured through the royal state of Rajasthan, where the enchanting lakes of Udaipur mirrored the grandeur of our dreams, and the vibrant streets of Jaipur beckoned us with their regal charm. The capital city of Delhi captivated us with its blend of historical landmarks and modern skyscrapers, providing a glimpse into the vibrant tapestry of Indian culture.
Along the way, we found solace in the welcoming embrace of Youth Hostels, a melting pot of international travelers who enriched our journey with their stories and experiences.
Once we reached Manila, it really tested our patience. There was a significant delay on the route from Manali to Leh because of challenges in clearing the road due to the heavy snow...This delay extended our original trip of 15 days to 35 days...
As we traversed the challenging roads and ascended higher into the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas, our spirits soared with every twist and turn. The magnitude of the mountains and the awe-inspiring beauty of nature humbled us, reminding us of our place in the grand scheme of things. ??? The journey was not without its challenges, as we patiently awaited the opening of passes from Manali to Leh. Our resourcefulness and unwavering determination became the fuel that kept us going, and our extended 35-day trip allowed us to forge deeper connections and create memories that would last a lifetime.
Amidst the breathtaking landscapes, the delay, the altitude (and the reduced levels of oxygen in the air) also tested our patience, friendship, and the tenacity of our humble bikes.
The impact of this extraordinary journey extended far beyond my personal life. I reflect on how the decisions made on this trip have influenced the direction of my professional career. The lessons of resilience, embracing diversity, and seeking adventure have become guiding principles that shape our work and approach to life. The realization that the journey itself holds profound significance has inspired me to craft compelling stories and experiences that resonate with others, be it through digital transformation or any other endeavor.
As I look back on the past 25 years, filled with travels across countries and living in different corners of the world, I realize that no trip has left a more indelible mark than the journey from Ahmedabad to Khardung La. The memories we created, the friendships we forged, and the transformative experiences we had during those 35 days continue to shape who we are today. It serves as a reminder that the true beauty of any endeavor lies in the journey itself – the challenges overcome, the lessons learned, and the connections forged along the way.
Join me as we celebrate the power of friendship, diversity, and the pursuit of adventure. Let this epic tale inspire you to embrace the journeys that lie before you, and to find the courage to embark on paths less traveled.
I am wondering if it's not time to plan another trip to the new highest motorable road in the world Umling La... Together, let us create stories that captivate hearts, spark imagination, and leave an indelible mark on the world.
