Today marks a significant milestone—25 incredible years at エニ filled with challenges, growth, and innovation.
My journey began as an electrical engineer and electrical power systems specialist at the Sannazzaro Refinery in Northern Italy, where I first learned the ropes of the oil and gas industry, including facing the millennium bug as a frontliner in the refinery. Although I specialized in energy, everything I know about petroleum and the environmental impact of oil, I learned through my experience at Eni. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of serving as Senior Manager in five different refineries: Sannazzaro, Livorno, Milazzo, Gela, and the ADNOC Group Refinery at Ruwais, each with its own unique challenges and opportunities.
Like any long career, mine has had its share of ups and downs.
There were difficult times that tested my resilience, but none more challenging than leading operations during the COVID-19 pandemic. As an expat in the UAE during the second wave, being a frontliner in the oil and gas sector meant navigating unprecedented uncertainty. I spent Christmas far from my family and friends, facing the hardships of isolation and the weight of responsibility to ensure the safety and continuity of our operations. These experiences only reinforced my determination and strengthened my resolve to succeed. Each challenge was a valuable lesson, shaping me into the leader I am today.
On September 6th, 2024, after 25 years, I am publishing a little book on leadership during these difficult times. This work is a reflection of my experiences and insights from my career, particularly the lessons learned while leading through a global crisis. It is written without any literary pretensions, focusing instead on sharing practical and meaningful insights. Special thanks to prof. Bill Fischer and Emilio Garcia Duarte for their unwavering support and invaluable feedback throughout this process. I am also especially grateful to all my friends from the academic world ( 瑞士洛桑国际管理发展学院 (IMD) - 商学院 , Luiss School of Government MIT Sloan Executive Education Università di Palermo Younipa ) for their support in bringing this book to life.
I am deeply thankful to all my colleagues, mentors, and team members—past and present—who have been part of this journey. Your guidance, support, and inspiration have made all the difference. Here's to continuing to innovate and drive positive change in the energy sector!
