Resilience isn't just a buzzword in today's volatile business landscape—it's a critical skill for survival and success. Yet, our research at the Ferrazzi Greenlight Research Institute has uncovered a startling gap: only 14% of team members feel they have a collective responsibility to lift each other's energy and mental well-being. In most teams, resilience is still seen as an individual responsibility.
This data point reveals both a challenge and an immense opportunity. While resilience is crucial for navigating uncertainty and maintaining high performance, the vast majority of teams are missing out on the power of collective resilience.
This gap in collective resilience is particularly concerning in light of recent findings from Gallup's State of the Global Workplace report. The study reveals that 41% of employees report experiencing "a lot of stress." However, the report also highlights a crucial insight: stress levels vary significantly depending on how organizations are run. Employees working in companies with poor management practices are 60% more likely to be stressed than those in environments with good management practices.
These statistics underscore two critical points. They show that the widespread nature of workplace stress makes resilience more important than ever. They also show that organizational practices can substantially change employee well-being and stress levels.
But what is resilience?
Resilience is the ability to adapt, bounce back, and even thrive in the face of adversity, change, and stress. It's about maintaining high performance and well-being despite challenging circumstances. In the business world, resilience is the difference between teams that crumble under pressure and those that innovate and excel through turbulent times.
Resilient teams are more productive, innovative, and able to navigate uncertainty with agility. They maintain focus on long-term goals while effectively managing short-term challenges. Resilient teams support the mental and emotional well-being of their members, leading to higher engagement, lower burnout, and better overall performance.
How do the world's best teams build and maintain their collective strength, bridging this resilience gap? The answer lies in a powerful quarterly practice I call the 25-Minute Resilience Spot-Check, a cornerstone of what I term "Teamship."
Introducing Teamship: The Ultimate Competitive Advantage
Before we dive into the Resilience Spot-Check, let's define Teamship. It's the ultimate competitive advantage and the differentiator between average teams and the extraordinary top 15% teams in the world. Elite teams have shifted from a traditional model of overstretched, hierarchical leadership to peer-to-peer teamship driven by:
Teamship—which I describe in full in my next book, Never Lead Alone—is about reimagining how we work together, and the 25-Minute Resilience Spot-Check is a prime example of this new approach in action.
The 25-Minute Resilience Spot-Check: A Quarterly Game-Changer for Team Strength
The 25-Minute Resilience Spot-Check is a structured, team-driven approach to monitoring and boosting collective resilience on a quarterly basis. Here's how it works:
Quarterly Schedule: The team sets aside 25 minutes every three months for this focused exercise. Team members reflect on and discuss ONE of four critical questions:
a) "Do I feel I'm on top of new ideas?" This addresses cognitive agility and the ability to grasp emerging concepts.
b) "Do I feel like the work I am doing matters?" This explores the sense of purpose and meaning in work.

c) "Do I feel like I'm ahead of the game in my area?" This focuses on foresight and planning for the future.
d) "Am I still listening to my team?" This examines the strength of team connections and communication.
For each question, each team member needs to give a score between 0 (low) and 5 (high).
Team Discussion: The group talks about their scores, explores challenges, issues, and opportunities that arise from these questions.
Action Planning: Team members volunteer to shepherd specific work threads that emerge from the discussion.
Why the Spot-Check Works
The effectiveness of this practice stems from several key factors:
When teams don't invest in resilience the consequences can be severe and far-reaching. Team members are more likely to experience chronic stress and exhaustion, potentially leading to burnout. Non-resilient teams struggle to maintain productivity in the face of challenges, leading to missed targets and declining results. Teams lacking resilience often retreat to safe, familiar approaches rather than taking calculated risks necessary for innovation. Ultimately, when resilience is low, team members are more likely to seek opportunities elsewhere, resulting in loss of talent and institutional knowledge.
I've witnessed the transformative power of this practice across various industries. For instance, a major tech company used the Resilience Spot-Check to navigate the challenges of remote work during the pandemic, resulting in higher engagement and lower burnout rates. In the financial sector, a global firm credits this practice with creating a more empathetic culture, leading to improved collaboration and innovation.

2 个月Great read. I believe teams have to build some level of "trust" with the organization, their leaders and with one another to practice resilience. In tough times, some people only look out for themselves making it difficult to focus on short and long term goals in the moment. Love the idea of the peer to peer aspect and continuous quarterly check-ins. This deepens the "Trust Factor" within the team.
