Most of us feel like we're currently the lead in the movie, "Groundhog Day."
A continuous loop of routine, and no end in sight.
But, this will end.
And with the end will come some mega-trends.
How do I know this?
History repeats itself. 2008 wasn't that long ago.
After the last recession, I did a lot of research on these trends and their impact on people's career choices. First, you should know these trends directly reflect Kubler-Ross's 5 stages of grief. The patterns emerge as society works through the trauma of the event.
Secondly, did you know there's something called, "Post Traumatic Growth"? It happens when an entire society is hit with tragedy. A good number of people actually end up HAPPIER once they make it through to the other side. Thus, it shouldn't surprise you some deep shifts in professional priorities are coming.
Understanding these mega-trends helps my clients determine how they want to take advantage and make the most of what has happened so they can experience Post Traumatic Growth.
4 Main Trends X 6 Sub-Trends = 24 Mega-Trends
The 4 main trends are:
- Escapism - the tendency to seek distraction and relief from unpleasant realities, especially by seeking entertainment or engaging in fantasy. i.e. alcohol & drugs, etc.
- Nesting - (of a bird or other animal) building or occupying a nest. i.e. DIY, etc.
- Economizing - spend less; reduce one's expenses by avoiding waste or extravagance. i.e. bartering, thrifting, etc.
- Personal Growth - the pursuit of positive activities, experiences, and education in an effort to become a better version of self. i.e. exercise, career change, etc.
Want to learn about all 24 sub-trends? Yesterday, I walked LinkedIn members through them in a live stream.
(FYI - I stream live on LinkedIn every Tuesday & Thursday at 2pm EST. You can follow my profile to get instant notifications & upcoming topics.)
