While teaching a graduate level class, I met a student who did not have a mobile device. No, the student is not older. We asked her many questions. This is when I told them I would disconnect for 24 hours.
December 30, 2015, 6AM, I made an attempt to disconnected for 24 hours. It was extremely hard because since 1988, I have been connected in some type of way. I always had a pager and mobile phone since 1988. The goal was to only answer the phone while at home. Well, I did not answer the phone at all because I did not receive any phone calls. However, I received and sent texts to my mom because that is how she communicates. For lunch my son, nephew and I went to our traditional “prior to returning to college” meal. I had to use Google maps for directions. No, I did not use the GPS. I looked at the directions before leaving home. It was hard not post to InstaGram, Facebook, Twitter, and SnapChat about our experience because our family use social media to stay connected. I was tempted many times to log on, however I successfully did not. December 31, 2015 at 6AM, I logged on and felt the relief to connect. I did not check email or use the search engines. This was also hard because emails were appearing on my status. Will I do this again? Only if I have no choice.

9 年If you think about its not so hard, just think that some of us are from time where we did not have the luxurious that we have today, We had to use pay phones, we had the rotatory phone before touch, we wrote letter or notes, we even waiting at home, restaurant, cafe patiently for that person to show up. We had faith, patient and we care with that face to face connection. Even though we have busy lives today, I think personally we have lost touch with each other, that human contact. So yes this is a very interest article, but how many of us can do this, even for 24 hrs

9 年For the sake of focus while working on projects: I turn off sync to my phone - so I get no email notifications. I often put my phone into airplane mode for several hours at a time - no interruptions at all. Also, once my work day starts, I log out of Facebook and all other social. Again, focused attention. This has resulted in MUCH HIGHER productivity.
