2.4 GHz is not dead
and it's the network's fault. Here's the thing, device manufacturers had to ensure that their devices worked on existing networks. What were existing networks? 2.4 GHz. Therefore, many devices are 2.4 GHz devices because they needed to be (cost factors, etc.). So, we shouldn't complain about the devices as much as we should be frustrated with ourselves for not beginning to implement 5 GHz WLANs sooner. We cannot abandon those key devices like door locks and medical equipment. So we need to make 2.4 GHz as good as we can and the begin transitioning devices to 5 GHz as budgets and time allow. That's real world.
