Find and attract Talent / Retain the Talent !
Dear readers,
In todays edition we will explore another undisputable pressing matter here on the island of Cyprus, which is: Finding and Retaining suitable talent. It has become increasingly pressing due to various factors which include (but are not limited to) missing proper work/life balance, various biases that push talents away, bad management (even from HR - yes! - let's acknowledge this), but most importantly due to the overall wrong attraction/retention strategies if even available, due to the rise of "aspiring recruiters / HR" with no demonstrable qualifications!
Like many other countries, we are facing a shortage of skilled workers in key industries such as technology, finance, hospitality and even healthcare. If you add on top of the above the biases that are being currently created due to the wave of big foreign companies on the island, it is making it even more difficult for companies in Cyprus to attract and retain talents pushing them to even relocate abroad.
As a OOP and HR I can only vouch that, the disability of attraction and missing strategies for retention of existing talents can only lead to the disheartening of the existing competent workforce which will ultimately result in decreased productivity and increased turnover rates with proof.
Suggested solutions
You can attract top talent by building a strong employer brand and by promoting your organization as a great place to work - but only if this is actual the case, because if it is not then it will surely backfire! However, if that is the case it can easily done by highlighting the company's culture, values, ethics and provide transparency where it's allowed.
Let me at this stage point out that the failure to proper recruit can also contribute to proper attraction. Companies sadly, and with no guild in most cases, often embrace unethical practices such as operating/recruiting on biases, or ghosting which will lead to bad reputation after all. Simple avoiding the above would resolve the issue.
Other solutions that should be provided by the organizations in Cyprus addressing the issue of retention is, to focus on employee engagement and develop relevant and up to date retention strategies, addressing the needs of all. This entails creating a positive work culture without forgetting the offering of competitive compensation and benefits packages. The implementation of employee trainings for self and professional development leading to career advancements should not be missed. Such developments should be acknowledged and celebrated. This will build employee self - esteem even converting them from employees to ambassadors - with the highest of ties! Increased productivity, high self appointed accountability and low turnover rates would be easily achieved this way.
In closing
In conclusion, the challenge of finding and retaining top talent is a pressing HR issue in Cyprus that needs to be addressed . By focusing on employee engagement and retention strategies, building a strong employer brand, and investing in employee training and development programs, organizations can attract and retain the best employees and create a more positive and productive work environment.
Thank you all!
