23 Sales in 2 days from my first Notion template on Gumroad (at 28% overall conversion)…Here’s how it all happened

Hey guys, I am new to the?Notion world and I recently happened to sell my first Notion template using Gumroad.

I thought being a first-timer, it would be wonderful to share with you guys my experience of what I learned right from creation to the sales process…

Here’s how it all happened.

Link to the template??

Bit of background

I have had some good experience creating templates for myself using spreadsheets in the past but never put them online for sales.

List of templates already created

I discovered Notion and started learning about it post-New Year.

I started experimenting and learning the basics (which I am still learning each day), and I was quite amazed at the versatility and power that this tool possesses.

I even started documenting my progress on all things that I was learning on my Twitter account (linked in bio) as well. This served as also a good revision for the things that I was learning along the way).

But more than this, what was the positive motivation was the community around Notion which is supportive and always encouraging of new things.

What is the template that I am talking about?

The template is called?“Relationship Tracker”.

This is the ultimate dashboard to track all your relationship commitments.

Basically, this tool helps you to organize and fulfill your relationship commitments based on priorities during the year (such as Weddings, Birthdays, Anniversaries, Travels, etc).

Here are some of the features that I included as part of the template.

Features:

  • View the overall performance of any number of events scheduled to be attended (such as Birthdays, Weddings, anniversaries, Travel, and more).
  • Get a timeline of all the events for the year set to any date.
  • Set the priority of an event to attend and fulfill your commitment based on your priority.
  • Track Daily, Weekly, Monthly, and Recent events.
  • Categorize your events based on relationship status with a person (such as Family, Friends, Colleagues, etc)
  • Add the expenses related to an event and get to know your total spending for all events related to a person and more

What was the idea behind working on this template?

I am really bad at remembering important dates of people connected in my life (such as Birthdays, Weddings, Anniversaries of people, etc).

The only thing that I can remember is my birthday mostly because that’s the time I receive birthday wishes…??

As such, this made me realize why don’t we make a resolution this year to:

  • I will attend 50% of birthday parties this year.
  • I will not cancel 70% of marriages this year.
  • I will make time to have the 3 travel trips planned with 4 of my friends this year etc.

But, one of the key difficulties that arise with this is that it becomes difficult to track the events scheduled during the year with so many people connected with our life and also setting the priority to each event.

So, is there any solution???

This gave me the impulse to think of what if, I could build something that can capture all events associated with persons connected to our life and know the overall performance score in the end.

(such as 75% of events attended by our family, only 15% of events missed related to my friend, etc)

How did I develop this product?

I am someone who works best when things are documented in a pen-and-paper style.

Here are 2 things that I kept in mind while developing the template:

1. Basic Requirements of the user

The basic requirement of the user was getting an overview of the events lined up during the year in relation to the people connected to our life (set up based on our priorities).

2. Planning the layout of the template

The template’s layout required the following details:

  1. Summary of the events that a person would attend during the year

This would include the following things:

  1. Categorization of the events based on relationship status with a person (such as Family, Friends, Colleagues, Others, etc).
  2. Name of the person concerned under each category

  • Number of events associated with the person
  • Percentage of the events attended vs total events planned during the year (shown visual progress bar)
  • Expenses incurred while being a part of the event (if any).

2. Timeline of events associated with the person concerned

3. Overview of Events

The overview section would give the show all the events falling under the following time frame:

  1. Events happening?today
  2. Events scheduled to happen?tomorrow
  3. Events that are scheduled to happen in the?next 7 days
  4. Recent events?that have happened in the past (if any)

4. Priority of Events associated to the person concerned

This will help the person filter out the events based on priorities:

  1. High
  2. Medium
  3. Low

Along with priorities, a person can also see the following:

  • Any?expenses?associated with that event.
  • Checkbox?to see if the event has been attended or not.

5. Other things included

Besides the above, the template also required a link to the?person’s database?and also?the events database?where you can add in the details related to each and assign the above-stated properties as well.

6. Things I missed

I wanted to also integrate a performance metric based on the events attended, such as:

  • Overall score of the person related to wedding events
  • Overall score of the person related to birthday events
  • Overall score of the person related to anniversary events etc

But I couldn’t find a crack to include the above things in this template…??

How did I promote the template after it was created?

Once the product was created, I uploaded the same onto Gumroad and kept the pricing as $0 (i.e. for FREE). I wasn’t sure of the response and thought to put it for free and test it out.

I promoted the product on several platforms such as:

  • Twitter
  • Instagram
  • Facebook
  • Discord
  • Notion related sites
  • YouTube etc.

But the best response I received was from?Twitter?and?Facebook, where I got some decent views as a beginner and got healthy conversions (even though it was for free…??).

I did put tweets onto Notion Twitter communities as well.

In specific I put 2–3 tweets on Twitter which gave the starting push. In specific this was the tweet that had some eyeballs on the page…

Facebook Groups also gave a slight push when it came to generating views from Facebook.

What were the key lessons I learned working on this template?

3 important lessons that I can take away from having worked on the template are:

  • Learning a new skill definitely has an advantage, stick to the process no matter what, and the outcome will follow no matter big or small.
  • Being in a community of fellow developers is really important to know what’s happening around you and get the desired support at times.
  • Focus on “creating stuff” and avoid any other negativities surrounding it, as you never know when your next idea can be something that can be marketable and bring greater success.

So, the whole underlining fact is that keep creating things and sharing it with others, good things will definitely follow.

I hope this has been helpful to anyone reading this.

But before signing off, I want to ask you guys for your suggestions and input regarding what should be my next project be based on the 4 options below:

  1. Create an AI tools list serving different audiences.
  2. Family Genealogy dashboard (Family tree)
  3. FIRE toolkit (Financial Independence Retirement Early)
  4. Complete the accounting package (right from account entries till the complete final report)
