23 March 2024 Updates: Australia's New English Language and Genuine Student Requirements for Student and Graduate Visas

?? Important Immigration Update!?

Whether you plan to study, work, or live in Australia, recent policy reforms can impact your journey. Staying informed and prepared is crucial. ?????????????

??

The Australian Government recently announced its new Migration Strategy on December 11, 2023. From March 23 2024, new English language requirements and a Genuine Student requirement will apply to Student(500) and Temporary Graduate(485) visa applications. These new policies aim to ensure international students have a positive educational experience in Australia and are well-prepared for the skilled workforce should they apply for a graduate visa after their studies.?

?

New English Requirements?

The new English requirements may seem stricter but don't worry – with proper preparation, you'll be fine! Here are the key changes:?

For the Temporary Graduate Visa?

  1. The overall IELTS score increases from 6.0 to 6.5, with a minimum of 5.5 in each component. ?
  2. The validity period for English language tests is reduced to 1 year before your visa application date.?

Graduate Visa English Requirements

?For the Student Visa?

  1. The minimum overall IELTS score rises from 5.5 to 6.0 or equivalent. ?
  2. The minimum score for packaged English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) increases from 4.5 to 5.0. ?
  3. If you're only studying English through ELICOS, the requirements remain unchanged. ?
  4. Students undertaking university foundation or pathway programs need an IELTS score of 5.5 or equivalent.?

Student Visa English Requirements

The aim is to ensure you have sufficient English proficiency to successfully transition into your main course of study.?

??

New Genuine Student Requirements?

Another significant change is the Genuine Student (GS) requirement, which replaced the previous Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement. ?

This means you no longer need to prove that you have no intention of staying in Australia beyond your studies. Instead, the new policy acknowledges that you may have opportunities to pursue permanent residency pathways after graduating.?

In assessing your genuine student intent, the government will consider:?

  1. Your personal circumstances and reasons for choosing to study in Australia.?
  2. Evidence of course progression, academic performance, and future career plans aligned with your chosen course.?
  3. Your immigration history, including compliance with previous visa conditions.?
  4. Any other relevant information demonstrating your genuine commitment to pursuing and completing the intended course of study.?

By evaluating these factors, the Department aims to identify non-genuine applicants seeking entry for purposes other than study, while supporting the government's strategy to attract and retain international students as potential skilled migrants.?

These changes reflect the Australian Government's new direction in encouraging international students to pursue qualifications in Australia and contribute to the skilled workforce. As applicants, we must stay updated and meet the new requirements.?
