23 Inspired Thoughts From Week 6 & 7

23 Inspired Thoughts From Week 6 & 7

  1. I’ve been reading David Goggins latest book: Never Finished → David spills some of his “secret sauce” on how he manages his mindset, including what he calls his “morning meeting” with himself. Each morning he goes through all the potential stressors of the day and comes up with strategies to manage them in advance. Do you have a morning meeting with yourself? This is something I have been working on incorporating into my daily routine…
  2. One second decisions → https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cg82Lrhjugw?
  3. Last week, I finished coaching the middle school basketball season. While we came up short in our final game, seeing the boys come back from being down 21 points in the 3rd quarter and having a chance to tie the game at the end was so inspiring! Can’t wait to get our spring program going.?
  4. Must watch for any coaches reading this - Steve Hardison is one of the most renowned coaches in the world and author of The Ultimate Coach. The concept of thoughts being equivalent to planting seeds that grow into trees really resonated with me… What kind of trees are you planting with your thoughts??
  5. On this week’s pod we chatted with Robin B. - he had a heart attack in September → he was inspired to leave his corporate career and buy a small biz. I was intrigued by the process he went through, how he got and processed all the advice and in particular his points on weighing what some ones “skin in the game” is as you sift through all the feedback you receive.??
  6. How do you value a small biz? This was another really interesting part of our conversation with Robin. Many of the conventional formulas don’t necessarily translate into the small biz space. Robin landed on, how much debt can we carry and have the venture still be profitable as one of the main considerations when finalizing the deal for The Gym Fitness Club | The Gym YYC
  7. Fully back on the exercise train – The last two weeks I have gotten in 300-500 minutes of exercise each week which has really helped me get my focus on track. I highly recommend checking out Krank Fitness if you are in #YYC - especially the 8:00 AM class!?
  8. Really enjoyed grabbing coffee with Karl Mome, P. Geo this week (Thanks for the intro Denise) and learning more about how he’s working on helping trainers, coaches and athletes through technology with Momentum Sports?
  9. J.P. Gaston & I had the privilege of visiting the Highbanks Society house this week - Big thanks to Krista Davidson-Flint for the invite and tour. For those of you who aren’t familiar, the highbanks society provides a safe, affordable home and nurturing community for Unsupported young mothers and their children are especially vulnerable to the cycle of poverty and homelessness. By providing housing and support, Highbanks assists in interrupting this cycle and helps young mothers to reach their full potential.
  10. Highbanks has been helping young Calgary mothers for over 20 years. They rely heavily on local donors and supporters to keep their program running as they are not eligible for government funding because they are not a faith based service. They have a small but mighty team that is doing amazing work in our community - we’re looking forward to collaborating with them more in 2023!?
  11. Had the privilege of grabbing coffee with Ian Schultz this week as well (Thanks for the invite Matthew Conrod ) – Ian was drafted 87th overall by the St. Louis Blues and later traded to the Montreal Canadiens. While he never got the opportunity to play a game in the NHL, he did play several years of professional hockey. He overcame alot on his journey, these days he is the owner of Underground fitness in marda loop -? really looking forward to diving into his journey on the pod in the near future!?
  12. Speaking of the pod - We’ve got some really cool episodes lined up to record in person this spring. Including an episode in early March where we will be recording from Status YYC with Jason Ribeiro, Ph.D. - President of the Calgary Surge . We’re excited that Nathanial Harper (Dojo alum!) will be video recording the episode as well. Love all the collaboration!!??
  13. Make time for family & friends. It’s 100% worth the time and effort.?
  14. I would like to take a graphic design course - any recommendations on a good place to start? [email protected]?
  15. Really enjoying the conversations I’ve had with Cory Chadwick the last few weeks about The Mental Gym → I am a big believer that we need to exercise our minds, proactively! Much like we do with our strength and conditioning in the gym. I’d highly recommend giving Cory a follow and joining for a workout (there’s one coming up next Friday!)?
  16. Do you incorporate play into work? JP, Sean & I had a chance to chat with Kirsten Anderson - founder of Integrate Play Solutions and she shared some insights into why play can help unlock your team's full potential - episode dropping on Tuesday wherever you get your podcasts!?
  17. Do you know where your food comes from? Had another amazing lunch at Matador Pizza & Steakhouse last week - I asked the owner, Jason Angello Seitanidis about the importance of sustainability, knowing where your ingredients come from etc. The short answer is yes, absolutely all the details matter to them. He then detailed where every single ingredient on my pizza came from, how the dough is meticulously prepared and how everything - including the Calgary air - contributes to making a high quality pizza.??
  18. Kendrick Lamar won rap album of the year for Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers - Personally, I think it’s one of the best hip-hop albums ever. Side note - the way he integrates Eckhart Tolle into the album, was just next level awesome.?
  19. One of my favourite spots to work, coffee shops around #yyc - I really enjoyed working from Pocket Coffee, Cafe Alchemist & Deville Kensington this week!??
  20. Congrats to my friend Jose Deverze (AKA Joze) on releasing his latest single: Ask 4 It?
  21. Shout out to former Biz Dojo guest - Xavier Moon on being selected to represent the USA for the upcoming World Cup qualifying tournament.?
  22. Speaking of former Dojo guests… did you see this dunk by Elijah Lufile last week at the BCL Tournament in Brampton??
  23. Next week, I am looking forward to… spending a ton of time with my kids who have a random full week off in February - adventure time!?

Great 23 Seth. This week I was inspired by the employees of a company we're currently working with in The Mental Gym. They're such a diverse group who come together doing great, meaningful work, and pushing themselves to grow as people so they can maximize the impact they have on others.

What inspired me this week was the hard work of people I met driving taxis, UBER, and working at the hotel on my recent business trip. They were all working 12 hour shifts to save money and support their families.
