22 things to consider on LinkedIn as we enter 2022

Here are 22 things you should consider for a great 2022 LinkedIn presence:

Always be you

(1) Be you - not someone else. If we met in person (that's what we call face-to-face interaction before 2020!), would I know that it's you?

(2) Use your language - it's fine to say "don't" rather than "do not" if that's how you speak. Seek not to use big, fancy words if that is simply not you.

(3) Comment and message in your way - if you see a post that relates to you, comment in your style. When someone direct messages you, again, reply back how you normally would.

(4) Share your interests, passions and what matters to you - seek not to shy away.

(5) Don't share something online that you wouldn't share with a room full of people you don't actually know.

Take a consistent approach

(6) Your visibility - take note of when you use LinkedIn. It helps the algorithms behind your profile & content by keeping this consistent - so use LinkedIn at similar times of the day.

(7) Your time - be realistic and have time you can consistently give to LinkedIn. 5-10 minutes a day or every other is ideal. Don't disappear for weeks.

(8) Your voice - keep the language, words, and even the grammar consistent. If you like to use an emoji (????) or two, be tactful in the placing to bring out your points. Let your personality shine through.

(9) Acronym - use little to no acronyms where you can in your content and profile too; your following will see you as a leader in your space. If you have many of them in your field, see that as a way you could educate others.

Content ideas

(10) Your reflections - it's great to have an opinion but don't be overly negative with everything.

(11) What to say - share content that is relevant to your career, or at least to the one you aspire to. This gives people a reason to listen to what you're saying and gives potential clients — or employers — a glimpse into your expertise.

(12) Visuals! - hook the reader in. Share documents, videos, or an image that grabs the attention alongside your worded content.

(13) "a day in the life of" - I'm yet to see one of these not get well-received engagement.

(14) Pick 3-5 themes - rotate your content across no more than 3-5 topics. Consider your goals, interests, hobbies, what you're working on, what it's like to work in your role/sector/business, local community support, and what motivates you.

Think with a growth attitude

(15) "Rome wasn't built in a day"... as the saying goes, neither was your career or client/prospect pool. So your online presence will need you to take small steps too.

(16) Take 1-3 actions per time you use LinkedIn - connect with someone; engage with someone's post; share content; comment back your reflections.

(17) Have a LinkedIn purpose - consider what has brought you to LinkedIn; and what you want it to do for you.

(18) Consider your goal(s) for LinkedIn - be SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound). Have your goal(s) aligned to your purpose.

Your network, following & profile

(19) Follow people, groups, and pages that inspire you - ideally ones that can give you purpose and content ideas too.

(20) Connect with others - those that you meet; those that others refer to you; those that you've known from some time ago. Building a wider network puts more eyes on you and your content.

(21) Make everything you do, personal - if you connect with someone, add an introduction to the invitation. If you message someone, personalise it as to why you're reaching out.

(22) Update your profile - does it still tell your story and what you wish for others to know about you? You might share great content, but your profile is months (if not years) out of date. Take a read of this article to get it ready.

Above all else, be yourself. Try different things - you'll soon get a flavour of what works for you.
