21st Century Managerial Skills

The world of work has changed dramatically over the past few years. Also the pandemic has taught us many lessons. A Gartner analysis shows that 46% of the workforce is projected to be working hybrid in the near future. Technology is changing fast. We are already experiencing the fourth industrial revolution era. To be successful in this new environment, managers must lead with enhanced & focused Skillset, Application, Values & Belief system to cope with Employees’ changing expectations & Business Results.

?As the famous management expert, Ram Charan, in his famous book called "Leadership Pipeline" explains that the "Value Transformation" is the most difficult shift for any Manager. Today's employees are more savvy & sophisticated about the career issues. They need more meaning & purpose in their jobs. Fast track career growths & freedom. Therefore, the managers need to not only master the managerial skills but also build the right values & beliefs in an attempt to be more effective.

Here is a checklist of critical questions that the manager need to understand -

  • Are you Fostering Congenial team relations ? Building effective social contracts with your team members?
  • Are you Available & Approachable - Are you answering your direct reports difficult questions candidly?
  • Do you value the Success of your direct reports ?
  • Do you value Open Communication & sharing relevant information with your team members ?
  • Do you value Making others Productive ??
  • Do you value building Capability in your team - engage in regular discussion - check ins & feedback sessions. Do you have the right intention to develop your direct reports?
  • Do you value Paying more Attention while assigning & planning job - is it aligned with their career aspiration as well as organizational goals?
  • Do you value Coaching your team members on how to do it ? or, you try to fix the problem yourself ?
  • Do you value Building confidence in the team by being reliable and practicing integrity .
  • Do you value providing support to your team members by encouraging work life balance ??
  • Do you value collaboration with team members by seeking & responding to ideas ? involving team members in important work decisions??
  • Are you an Empathetic Leader ? (Empathetic leadership means?having the ability to understand the needs of others, and being aware of their feelings and thoughts).
  • Do you value & practice Fair treatment by avoiding bias & discriminations ??
  • Do you ensure an effective performance conversation frequently ?
  • Do you ensure that your team is developing highly marketable skills that will enhance their career prospects (within the organization)?

Managers in any organization play an extremely important role in shaping the Work Environment. They provide an environment to their team wherein each individual can give their personal best.?The most effective people managers build trusting relationships, encourage camaraderie, and foster pride in the job.

HR focus is to hire and develop managers who were poised to be great coaches and mentors and teachers.?Now a days the transformative trends are challenging traditional definitions of the manager role. The relationships between employees and their managers have started to shift to be more emotional and supportive. Employees now expect their managers to be part of their support system to help them improve their life experience, rather than just their?employee experience.
