It’s very common to hear from clients and business leaders about their frustrations in regards to employee “buy-in”, which I prefer to call BRAND MOTIVATION.
The fact is, EVERY member of your team represents you, your culture and your brand… And after leading thousands of employees “in the trenches” over the past 25 years, I say it comes down to one simple statement.
“IF YOU’RE NOT IN, YOU’RE OUT.”
Admittedly, as leaders, we have to first look at ourselves in the mirror, which is not easy to honestly do.
Are we leading or managing?
Are we directing or influencing?
Are we digging deep enough with each individual team member to genuinely support them or are we simply expecting them to perform based on expectations spelled out in a job description?
Through my own lessons learned and the fundamental belief in “21st Century Leadership”, we must consistently enhance and EXECUTE coaching principles and care to our team members. We must help them discover and inspire their purpose for showing up every day. We must connect them with one another to build the culture that attracts and retains our desired clientele (and more committed people like them). We must help them grow vs putting them in a cage for fear that they will leave us and take clients with them.
Instead, if we mentor and share our own vulnerabilities with our team members, respect that their jobs with us are a “stepping stone” and a memorable piece of the journey to their own individual greatness, they will listen and apply what we teach them. They will also look back and state, “Because of my time with you, I am now here.”
That’s what great coaches and leaders do. They transform from management to positively impacting their people. They value their team members even more than their clients… and that’s how you build a legacy and define your life’s work.
And for those that don’t follow our lead and vision after all of the above?
“YOU’RE OUT.”
And we all breathe easier moving forward.
