21days to form a habit, good or bad...

I remember back in 1995 when I started at Moran of Melbourne, as a fresh 21yr old, a Mr Wally Sutton told me not to worry about working 7 days per week. "..You'll get used it" he exclaimed over our 6th plastic cup of International Roast coffee by 10am ... "...in 21 days you'll forget what life was like with weekends!" Having been in retail since 2010, no truer words have been spoken ;)
With my kids playing basketball in the stadiums of independent (private) schools on Saturdays, I've always noted the quality of these facilities compared to the public assets. The courts are polished and re-lined twice a year and the toilets are kept in immaculate condition. The swimming pools are of Olympic standards, the landscaped gardens are manicured and gated car parks offer a sense of security and decorum.
Yet the ICT rooms (computer rooms) and libraries have been washed over with some funky, colourful upholstered cubes for students to sit at. Gives a sense of modernity, that the school is 'down with it' or something like that. For me, given the AUD$25K/head price-tag to attend most of these institutions, I'd be sabre rattling for change.
Such schools present a point of difference in the education sector, said to nurture and stretch the student both to achieve the excellence they individually are capable of. Be it academic or sporting, socially or culturally, it is with pride that such institutions talk to 'lessons for life'; teaching the many ways in which to achieve success in all facets of growth by the creation of good study, work and socialisation habits.
Yet their teenagers are encouraged to acquire the habits of poor posture. Be it the upholstered cubes or cylinders, or maybe the moulded plastic chairs found in all classrooms, whose design heritage harks back to the embrace of plastics technology from post WWII. All doing one thing : encouraging the student body (figuratively and literally) to slouch. Rounding of the shoulders, weakening the core ... all during these young bodies' most challenging growth periods.
And then when these kids get home and confront the many hours of study expected, they do so slouching on a piece of furniture purchased from a business whose mainstay is staplers, photocopier paper and highlighters. All care and no responsibility. Upholstered some petroleum by-product, transmitting it's emitting solvents directly into their skin.
A kneeling chair is daunting for an adult, despite the immediate physical effects positively flowing through your body thanks to core engagement and shoulders back ... far more comfortable than slouching.
Maybe you're a parent .. maybe an educator. But for children, whose habits are still being formed without discrimination, surely an early intervention is worthy. You've bought the devices, paid the school fees and extra curricular activities ... now do something for the forming bodies.
Who would you think gets the job between two people with equal skills and qualifications : the one slumped, with round shoulders making noises as they rise from their chair for that 1st important handshake ... or the one with the genuine smile, strong core and square shoulders that rises without effort?
Our store carries this chair and offers delivery within (6) weeks of order from Norway. For the fashion conscious, choose from over (100) fabrics or (117) leathers. Borrow one for a night or two - try before you buy.
