#2/10 learnings from re-inventing workshops in times of Corona

Here is #2 of 10 of my essential "aha" moments when re-inventing our workshops in the online world:

The 120/5 rule

As mentioned in my #1 learning, some of the building blocks of blended learning will happen "live Online". We have all heard "the dose makes the poison" in many contexts - and it is true for live online sessions as well: any session with a duration beyond 2 hours (even with breaks) is purgatory - and does not lead to happy participants (and returning customers).

For "time between interactions" the magic number is 5: ideally, you should never ask your participants to listen to you or any presenter (even their boss) for more than 5 minutes - otherwise you will lose them. Sounds like a challenge? It is! But frequent interaction and keeping an eye on participant engagement is the key to a training that truly brings value to your participants (and, ultimately, to you).

What are your experiences in this field? Looking forward to your comments!

Overview of all learnings:

#1 Blended is the key

5 minutes is a challenge if you are teaching or explaining a concept that is new to them, or complicated or technical in nature. But I think that depends on how you define an exercise or activity. Low hanging fruit is getting the audience engaged in a discussion on the point being taught so they learn together through a discussion of understanding. You can limit your “lecture” time, with tactics like this without having to go into a really formal exercise.
