21 Laws of Leadership for Physicians
Christopher Burton, MD
Author, Investor (Healthcare, M&A, Real Estate), Physician, Thought Leader
Leadership is in vogue these days. Everywhere you turn people are talking about it. Healthcare is no different. Hospitals, specialty societies and organized medicine are all stressing the importance of leadership for physicians. The problem is that most of us never learned how to lead effectively. Sure, we served in leadership positions in high school and college, which looks good on our medical school application. However, how many of us ever took a course on leadership?
There are universities promoting live courses on leadership in healthcare now. And while they may have excellent curriculum, how many physicians do you know who can take off a week or two from their practice to attend? The answer is not many. Early in my career, I realized how important leadership and communication are to me as a physician. That is why I was intentional in investing in my own training. Now I help other physicians learn the same things I did... but without missing time from their practices. My one-on-one coaching and workshops get to the point of what a practicing physician needs to know. Of course I can't be everywhere or coach every physician personally, so I decided to record 21 lessons from a great book on leadership: The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John C. Maxwell.
It is my hope that this series of leadership lessons will help other physicians get started on their leadership journey. Watch the videos here, and leave your feedback below. Which leadership principle resonates most with you?

Great post Dr. Burton! Allow me to add that leadership is a journey. Physicians are often thrust into the role of being business owners, but they may not be equipped. John Maxwell readings are good. Lloyd J. Edwards has a good one on values based leadership. Thanks for posting!
