It takes more than 20 days. a lot of courage, discipline, efforts, consistency and practice to create a habit.
The 21 Day Habit Theory was first introduced by Maxwell Maltz, a plastic surgeon in the 1950s. He discovered that a patient who had, for example a face operation, would need 21 days to get used to seeing their new face. There are multiple such examples and researches on this theory and it is yet to be proved that this theory stands true or not.
All of us in India got the gift of 21 days to stay at home. Probably you are thinking why would i call it a gift when around the world people are staying indoor and struggling with the feeling of fear, desperation, uncertainty and depression that could lead to pessimism. So the fact is COVID 19 is a reality and all of us have to accept it.
When a crisis hits which can't be controlled by anyone, the first thing to do is to accept it. Once you have accepted it, the next step is to understand how to deal with it. Here are 3 simple steps that are in our control.
Stay Home at all times
Wash hands and take care of personal hygiene as much as possible
Eat Healthy
So what next?
How many of us have been struggling to manage sometime to take care of our personal wellbeing? We are in a forced full lock down situation and by the time this difficult period is over and we are back on with our normal life (and believe me it will happen soon if we are determined to do it), we will realize that the time gifted to us could have been managed better.
So here i am inviting all of you to challenge yourself and try the theory of 21 days to create a habit. Now when we have all the time required with us, lets create a discipline for us that includes all the things that matter the most in our lives:
Praying: Spend sometime Thanking God for taking care of us and saying sorry for all the bad things we have done to our mother earth/nature.
Meditation: Meditate for minimum 15 mins daily (i am not starting about the benefits of meditation, there are more and enough materials available on the topic)
Exercise: Spend 45 mins daily to do any kind of physical exercise that suits you (Yoga, aerobics, Zumba, Indoor games etc). Lets see if we can create a habit of working out every day.
Eat Well: Make sure we eat healthy and in time
Spend time with Family: Last but not the least. Our current crisis has teached us one thing for sure, and that is "Nothing else matters more that our families and our loved ones". Do things with the family that you otherwise only wished you could (play with your kids, talk to the elder family members, listen to music, sing, dance, cook, listen to the birds ..the list is endless).
Be your own coach and decide the timing you want to put for each activity as per what suits you the best.
We are in this together and we have a choice, either take it as a punishment and not do anything different OR take these 21 days as an opportunity and challenge ourselves to create the habit that we always wished and come out of this testing time as a better version of ourselves. Choice is YOURS....
