There were so many takeaways from?Ilise Benun's interview with Rodika Tollefson - it is a challenge to focus on just one. But first, I want to thank Rodika for her generosity, sharing her knowledge and experience, and Ilise for sharing her knowledge and experience and incorporating such wonderful guests into the 21-Day Challenge.
Rodika recounted her start in copy and content and how she found her primary market in cybersecurity when she wasn’t really looking for it. She described realizing she wanted to write in the cybersecurity industry after discovering she had a natural interest in researching and learning about cybersecurity. Rodika related that due to the evolutionary nature of cybersecurity and technology, it is a niche that is in demand and offers a tremendous opportunity where copy and content writers can grow.
Along that same line, Rodika discussed the importance of persistence, curiosity, and intentionality in building your brand and your business. Listening to her speak, it is obvious that taking steps to work in a sector that piques your interest can be the difference between generic and quality content.

Rodika reminded everyone that a writer’s value relies on providing quality conversational copy and content regardless of the opportunity available in a particular niche - discussing too that it is vital to communicate with clients in their trade language to demonstrate that you understand the “technical jargon” during the discovery session to lend credibility to your expertise in the field. Essentially, if you can speak the “jargon” during discovery and then demonstrate that you can translate “jargon” to every-man speak in your content, you build credibility and prove your value.
Trying to sum up the biggest takeaway from Rodika –
She emphasized that whether you are marketing to clients or marketing for clients, it all boils down to a mindset of perpetual learning – learning about the product, the client, the end-user, and all types of marketing – including marketing yourself – growth will happen. To use Rodika’s words, she said, “We are all our worst self-critics – that’s how you grow. That’s how you Learn.”
