#20.Leadership role in Promoting Balanced Work-Life and Well-Being

As a leader, your responsibility extends beyond just achieving organizational goals. It encompasses creating a workspace that nurtures the well-being of your team members and promotes a healthy work-life balance.

"When you put the well-being of your team first, you'll find that they will go above and beyond for you and the organisation." - Tony Hsieh

In other words

“Your customer experience will barely exceed your Employee experience."

This commitment is not only ethically sound but also strategically beneficial, as a balanced and content team tends to be more productive and engaged.

First and foremost, leading by example is pivotal. Team members closely observe their leaders, and if they perceive their leader as constantly overworking or disregarding their own well-being, they are likely to mimic this behaviour.

?

During my corporate leadership, I remember that I barely reached to any of my managers or team members while they were on vacation or any personal leave. We focused on developing processes that are self-sustained with a proxy in place for each process and not person-dependent.

At times I even asked explanation if I saw members coming to the office on holidays or weekends to complete any unfinished work because for me it was a kind of wrong culture and there was something that seemed to be wrong in the process that needed to be addressed immediately.?

?

Demonstrating that you value and prioritize work-life balance sets the tone for your team.

?

Sheryl Sandberg: The COO of Facebook, Sheryl Sandberg, is a firm believer in "work-life fit." In her book "Lean In," she shares her approach to managing her professional and personal responsibilities. Sandberg stresses the importance of leaving work at a set time to prioritize family and personal life while still being fully committed during work hours.

?

Clear expectations play a crucial role in this process. Communicate to your team what you expect regarding work hours, email responsiveness during off-hours, and the importance of taking breaks.

Encourage them to disconnect after work hours and make it explicit that their well-being matters to the organisation.

?

Jeff Weiner: As the former CEO of LinkedIn, Jeff Weiner emphasized the importance of maintaining a healthy work life balance. He believes that creating space for personal time, reflection, and family life ultimately makes him a better leader. Weiner is known for scheduling regular "buffers" in his workday to ensure that he has time for reflection and strategic thinking.

?

Flexibility is another valuable aspect to consider. In the modern workplace, rigid 9-to-5 schedules may not suit everyone's lifestyle or responsibilities.

Offering flexible work arrangements, such as flexible hours, remote work options, or compressed workweeks, can accommodate various needs and alleviate stress for some team members.

?

Vacation days and personal time off should be actively encouraged. A culture where employees feel guilty for taking time off can lead to burnout and decreased morale.

Emphasise the importance of taking breaks and fully disconnecting during vacations to recharge and return to work with renewed energy.

Monitoring workload is essential. Keep a close eye on workloads and ensure that no one is consistently overloaded.

Equitably distribute tasks and responsibilities among team members, and be prepared to provide support or allocate additional resources when necessary to maintain a manageable workload.

?

Well-being initiatives can make a significant impact. Consider offering wellness programs or initiatives such as fitness challenges, mindfulness workshops, or health insurance benefits. Encouraging regular exercise, breaks, and healthy eating habits fosters physical and mental well-being.

Arianna Huffington: The founder of The Huffington Post and CEO of Thrive Global, Arianna Huffington, is a strong advocate for work-life balance. After collapsing from exhaustion in 2007, she realized the importance of self-care and sleep. Huffington now promotes the idea that prioritizing well-being leads to greater success and productivity.

?

Open communication is key. Create a safe space where team members can openly express their concerns or challenges related to work-life balance and well-being.

Listening actively and taking appropriate actions to address concerns demonstrates your commitment to their welfare.

?

Training and development opportunities can help team members manage their work and personal lives more effectively. Offer training on time management, stress reduction, and other relevant skills that can empower them to balance their responsibilities more efficiently.

Recognition and celebration are motivational tools.?

Acknowledge and celebrate both individual and team achievements, big and small. Recognizing hard work and accomplishments boosts morale and motivation, contributing to a positive work environment.

?

Supporting mental health is equally crucial. Acknowledge the significance of mental health and provide resources for employees who may be struggling.

Encourage seeking professional help when needed and work to reduce the stigma associated with mental health issues.

?

N. R. Narayana Murthy's Letter to Son: In a famous letter to his son, Narayana Murthy stressed the significance of ethics, values, and work-life balance. He highlighted the idea that success should not come at the expense of personal well-being.

Regular check-ins with team members are valuable. Schedule one-on-one meetings to discuss their well-being, workload, and any challenges they may be facing.

Show empathy, actively listen, and be willing to make necessary adjustments to accommodate their needs.

?

Work-life integration is an emerging concept that views work and life as interconnected rather than separate entities.?

Encourage team members to find ways to blend their personal and professional lives in a way that works for them, emphasizing flexibility and balance.

R. Gopalakrishnan (Former Executive Director, Tata Sons): R. Gopalakrishnan has been a proponent of holistic leadership, emphasizing the importance of balancing personal and professional lives. He has authored books that explore these concepts in depth.?

Continuous improvement is the key to success. Seek feedback from your team about the work culture initiatives in place and actively use this feedback to make improvements and adjustments as necessary.

An evolving approach that adapts to the changing needs of your team is essential.

?

In conclusion, as a leader, you have a significant role to play in creating an environment that supports work-life balance and well-being.

By prioritising these principles, you can foster a workplace where your team can thrive both professionally and personally.

This not only benefits individual team members but also contributes to increased productivity, job satisfaction, and retention, ultimately leading to the success of your organization.
