2027 - The SAP Support Deadline looms ever closer

This fact is gaining more coverage as reality sets in… In the Register we see yet another article highlighting these same concerns…

  • A lack of skilled resources
  • Time is running out to make the move to S4
  • Only a third of ECC customers have subscribed to S4 licenses

The full article can be found below:

https://www.theregister.com/2024/06/12/sap_ecc_support_deadline/

In this article they highlight some interesting considerations

Last autumn a Gartner survey found that only 33 percent of SAP users relying on ECC had bought or subscribed to licenses to start their transition to S/4HANA.

This means that two thirds have not yet made a decision

As previously stated in my last article on this we are running out of time and skilled resources to conduct these transfomation programmes.

Don't be left Behind!

The Register article goes on further and highlights that some ECC users would probably even struggle to make the 2030 deadline.

This would be a major concern for those customers who are inadvertently left behind. Granted ECC won't just stop working but support will come at a premium cost from third party vendors and could be very difficult to obtain as the focus will undoubtedly be on new technology.

Get your data profiled, cleansed and mapped now. Run it as a separate project to put you in pole position. Don’t start at the back of the pack or in pit lane cause your r2 engine. Doing this I can promise you will deliver faster and you will have a smoother transformation. Neglect this crucial step and you’ve just added 9-12 months to your project and all the costs that goes with it. Roughly, about 500,000 - 1 million per month, if you go with one of the more prominent SI’s. Times that by 18 months and that’s being on the low side. Add data and testing to that. Data delays testing, training, processes, CoA and delivery! To name but a few!

Here is the key sentence here: "Granted ECC won't just stop working but support will come at a premium cost from third party vendors and could be very difficult to obtain as the focus will undoubtedly be on new technology." - that is the elephant in the room, right there. In five years time, when most of the ECC consultants have retired or retrained as S/4 consultants, how on earth are you going to attract people to work on 25 year old technology?
