The 2025 state of Digital Marketing

The 2025 state of Digital Marketing

Stepping into 2025, it's a great moment to look forward and be optimistic. After taking some time to reflect and learn. After working in this field for 12 years now, it felt time for me to check-in; ask myself: What is the state of the field of work I am in? How do I keep up, create professional growth as a marketeer and what will the future then bring?

2025 brings a transformational crossroad where technology, creativity and responsibility will emerge. It is however about how we do this, that enables us to create meaningful innovations.

I tried to summarize this into the most important learnings I took from this research and proudly present you: The 2025 state of Digital Marketing!

Lessons Learned & Key Insights

Although my focus for digital marketing came in the early 2010's, it is already the past 20 years that brought us a new reality of rapidly emerging technologies. Looking alone at the amount of digital agencies that turned 20 last year, it is a sign that although we are midway the decade, we are entering a new era of digital marketing. The integration of AI tools has automated many tasks, yet the role of a digital marketer remains as thrilling as ever, offering a front-row seat to technological innovations that drive business growth.

One key insight from my perspective is the absence of a 'one-size-fits-all' approach to digital marketing. Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) often remain skeptical about digital marketing’s value, seeking immediate returns on investment. This demand for instant gratification can hinder their willingness to invest in long-term strategies, potentially limiting their growth. Research from Gartner indicates that SMB's adopting digital marketing strategies experience higher growth rates compared to those that don’t.

It doesn't have to be hard, just be present and be authentic

For SMB's my advice is simpel: Just start, if necessary start small. Create engaging and valuable content that resonates with your target audience to drive traffic and build brand authority. It doesn't have to be hard, just be present and be authentic and try to create a storyline into your messages.

Improve your website’s visibility on search engines to attract organic traffic, make use of the many tools that are available to create content and establish a presence on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn to engage with your audience and drive conversions.

Key Digital Marketing Insights for 2025

In contrast, larger organizations often adopt a more strategic approach, with marketing executives deeply invested in the impact of their budgets on the company’s success. It is often thought of that these budgets are monitored less, or are valued less because of the amount. But less is true, in my experience good marketing executives are very much involved in the succes of their investments too. To grow marketing performance there are a few key insights to keep in mind for 2025:

1. Embracing AI and Automation

AI adoption is accelerating. 麦肯锡 reports that 50% of organizations already use AI in at least one business function, and those that adopt early see higher revenue growth. Delaying AI integration risks falling behind competitors.
