2025 Salary Transparency Laws Update - 5 New States

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) just posted the 5 new states enacting Salary Transparency Laws in 2025, which requires salary ranges be included in job postings—Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, Vermont, and Massachusetts. Here are the effective dates and which employers are impacted:

  1. ILLINOIS - Effective 1/1/2025: Applies to employers with 15+ employees.
  2. MINNESOTA - Effective 1/1/2025: Applies to employers with 30+ employees.
  3. NEW JERSEY - Effective 6/1/2025: Applies to employers with 10+ employees.
  4. VERMONT - Effective 7/1/2025: Applies to employers with 5+ employees.
  5. MASSACHUSETTS - Effective 10/29/2025: Applies to employers with 25+ employees.

According to Employment and Labor Attorney, Dean Shauger, here's what employers should do now:

  1. Update Your Job Postings: Ensure all your job ads include the required salary information.
  2. Train Your Team: Make sure your HR and recruiting staff are aware of and understand these new requirements.
  3. Consult Legal Counsel: It’s a good idea to discuss these changes with your legal team to stay compliant across all states, especially multistate employers who may operate in several states with varying pay disclosure requirements.

Staying compliant not only helps you avoid penalties but also fosters trust and attracts top talent through transparency.

For comprehensive guidelines or to determine if your state has established salary transparency laws, visit your state’s Department of Labor website.

Great info, Sandy! Thanks for breaking this down so clearly. This is especially helpful for organizations that don’t have a legal team to navigate these changes. It’s a great reminder to update our job postings and maintain transparency. Appreciate you sharing this update!

Great article Sandy! It has a lot of helpful information.
