2025 is in, Micromanaging is out.

Dear Readers,?

Happy New Year from Sensate!?

As we step into 2025, we’re embracing renewal and reinvigoration with open arms.?

Looking back, 2024 was nothing short of incredible! Our Sensate family grew, we launched our sister company, Sensate Talent and delivered some of the most creative and impactful training programs since our journey began in 2020.?

Our passports are well-stamped! From the GCC region to India, Qatar, Malaysia, and Turkey, we collaborated with globally renowned luxury brands, designing and delivering workshops on etiquette, culture, leadership, retail, and service excellence.?

Speaking of growth, Sensate Talent is now a boutique recruitment agency specializing in the luxury sector. We’re proud to support Emiratization and recruit for specialized roles, building teams that exude excellence.?

After such a rewarding year, we’re kicking off 2025 with the same energy—and we’re tackling a topic we passionately oppose: Micromanagement.?

The mere mention of micromanagement can spark frustration. Defined as “controlling every part, however small, of an enterprise or activity,” the word barely scratches the surface of the burnout, disengagement, and stifled creativity it causes.?

Micromanagement doesn’t just control—it suffocates. It drains energy, dampens passion, and transforms the workplace into a space of dread rather than collaboration and innovation.?

In fact, Sensate’s very foundation was built on rejecting micromanagement. Our founder, Ben Safra, left behind 25 years in corporate life to create a space where leaders could unlearn micromanagement and foster workplaces that empower rather than control.?

This year let’s commit to a better way of leading—one that trusts, empowers, and inspires.?

Stay tuned for insights, tips, and tools to make 2025 a micromanagement-free year!?

Let’s get personal: My thoughts on Micromanagement?

When I was researching to put this article together, I found out that there is no conclusive psychological study on micromanagement. However, to tie micromanagement to psychological roots, several articles claim that micromanaging tendencies stem from a lack of trust and fear of failure. Due to their fear of something going wrong or getting delayed, they usually try to control every detail. While every professional setting has the mission to strive for perfection, adding micromanagers to the mix can cause the office to strive inefficiently.?

Upon research I came across a very interesting read that I’d like to highlight; according to an?article by Harvard Business Review, people tend to micromanage for two main reasons: they would like to feel more connected to their junior employees, and they’d like to do their previous role than oversee the people currently executing that role. Which is a refreshing take from the usual negative narrative that surrounds micromanagers and their habits. ?

Let's dig into some habits that can help you spot (and stop) micromanaging in its tracks.?

Habits that scream “Micromanager!”?

  1. Minimal task delegation?

According to two psychological studies, micromanagement tendencies stem from personal anxiety, insecurity and general discomfort of being in the role. Individuals with these personality traits are far less willing to delegate tasks across their department.?This results in most projects and tasks remaining on their calendars and tasks lists. ?

2. No effective communication?

Another common trait that micromanagers tend to have is, difficulty communicating. This can be evident in their delegation strategies and email etiquette, the lack of effective communication directly results in a task being worked on without thorough?instructions, direction and aim. ?

3. The false belief that nobody is capable?

Employees are usually promoted to managerial roles because they have excelled in their responsibilities and are capable of seniority. This can lead micromanagers to believe that they have been given the role because they are expected to be managing a team less capable than they are. ?

How we’re battling Micromanagement at Sensate! ?

Sensate is a product of the?realisation that “I’m being micromanaged” after years of putting up with it. At sensate, we polish leaders to do better by their juniors and executives, by helping them adopt a human approach by centering integral aspects like mindset, skill set, and behavior. We pride ourselves in doing so, by:?

  • Helping leaders adopt trust as a manager?

The foundation of our learning and development programs is trust. Trust allows for open communication, effective delegation, a smooth workflow, and most importantly, happy and healthy employees. We teach leaders to implement an open and trusting environment as this is key in eliminating micromanagement.?

  • Helping companies retain employees?

In the book?My Way or the Highway: The Micromanagement Survival Guide, the author highlights a survey in which approximately 69% of employees said they considered changing jobs because of micromanagement, and another 36% changed jobs.?

By training and developing the leadership board of companies, Sensate is directly impacting the employee retention rates simply by altering the behaviors and approach that employees receive daily; in other words, we help you look forward to your Mondays and not just Fridays.
