Insights from Softworld’s LinkedIn Polls: Training, Work Preferences, and Tech Trends Defining 2025

Softworld has been gathering valuable insights through a series of LinkedIn polls, revealing key trends that are shaping how professionals approach training, work setups, and IT skill development. With hundreds of responses from industry experts, these poll results provide a clear picture of what to expect in the coming year. Here's our analysis of the data and what it means for organizations moving forward.

Training Preferences: The Dominance of Online Training

One of the most striking insights from our first poll is the overwhelming preference for Online Training/Certifications, with 63% of respondents selecting this option as the most beneficial for staying ahead in their industry. This preference reflects a clear shift towards flexible, on-demand learning, driven by the need to adapt quickly to evolving technologies and market demands.

In contrast, In-person Workshops ranked second at 24%, showing that while digital learning is dominant, there’s still value in face-to-face interaction for some professionals. Meanwhile, Webinars (11%) and Informational Guides/Whitepapers (2%) lagged far behind, suggesting that more passive forms of learning might not be as effective for today’s professionals.

What does this mean for organizations? The preference for online training underscores the importance of investing in robust, scalable learning platforms that allow employees to upskill at their own pace. Offering certifications, hands-on digital labs, and interactive courses will be critical to engaging and retaining top talent.

Work Setup for 2025: Remote Work Is Still King

When we asked how professionals envision their ideal work setup for 2025, Fully Remote work was the clear winner with 61% of the vote. This strong preference highlights the lasting impact of the remote work movement, which has redefined work-life balance, productivity, and collaboration since the pandemic.

Hybrid Work (2-3 Days On-Site) followed with 24%, signaling that some employees value a blend of remote and in-office work. Interestingly, Flexible (Optional On-Site) came in at 12%, despite offering the best of both worlds—a fact that several commenters pointed out. As one participant remarked, “Flexible encompasses ‘Fully Remote’ but with the option of coming into an office to be around those you work with from time to time. I suppose this reflects the modern tendency to quickly react before fully processing the data shown.”

Fully In-Office Work garnered just 3%, reflecting a waning desire to return to the traditional 9-to-5 office model.

For employers, these results reinforce the importance of providing flexible work options to meet employee preferences. Companies that offer flexibility, whether through hybrid or remote-first policies, are likely to stay competitive in attracting and retaining talent.

Skills in Focus: Cybersecurity and Cloud Engineering Lead

When it comes to the most important IT skills for 2025, Cybersecurity emerged as the top focus area for 36% of respondents. This isn’t surprising given the increasing sophistication of cyber threats and the rising demand for cybersecurity professionals. With businesses relying more heavily on digital infrastructures, securing sensitive data and systems has become paramount.

Close behind was Cloud Engineering at 27%, underscoring the growing importance of cloud technologies in transforming operations and driving innovation. As more organizations migrate to the cloud, mastering cloud architecture, security, and services will continue to be a critical skill set.

Data Analytics captured 26% of the vote, reflecting the vital role data plays in driving business decisions, while DevOps came in at 11%, a skill that remains crucial for streamlining development and operations processes.

These results suggest that for IT professionals, focusing on security and cloud architecture will be key to staying competitive. For businesses, investing in cybersecurity and cloud infrastructure will be essential for operational resilience and growth in 2025.

Tech Trends to Watch: AI Dominates the Future

Finally, we asked which technology trend will have the most significant impact in shaping 2025. The overwhelming majority—83%—selected AI and Machine Learning as the game-changer. This response underscores the growing belief that AI will not only continue to transform industries but fundamentally alter how businesses operate, from automating routine tasks to generating insights and enabling smarter decision-making.

Other trends, such as Blockchain/Web3 Technologies (8%), Sustainability/Green Tech (6%), and IoT and Smart Connectivity (3%), registered far fewer votes. While these technologies still hold potential, it’s clear that AI is expected to lead the charge in driving the next wave of innovation.

For businesses, this means adopting AI tools and building AI literacy across teams will be critical for success. Companies that integrate AI into their workflows and decision-making processes will be better positioned to stay ahead in a competitive landscape.

What These Results Mean for 2025

As we move into 2025, the results of these polls offer clear insights for both professionals and organizations. Online training is emerging as the preferred method for upskilling, remote and flexible work options are crucial for employee satisfaction, and AI is poised to have the most transformative impact on the future of business.

For companies, the message is clear: embrace flexibility, invest in talent development, and adopt cutting-edge technologies to stay competitive.
