2024's lesson? Get a release valve

Wow. Am I glad that’s almost over.

2024 has been a rollercoaster, with dizzying highs, gut-punching lows, and moments where I wasn’t entirely sure which way was up.

Let’s start with the good stuff—because there has been plenty of it.

Let’s talk about tech first because, honestly, it’s impossible not to. Generative AI has officially gone from niche curiosity to, well, everywhere. Watching how businesses and policymakers try to figure it out has been fascinating—like seeing a toddler try to run before they’ve nailed walking. But it’s not all stumbles. We’ve shown how AI can genuinely help people: solving problems, creating opportunities, and even cutting through the noise of disinformation (more on that later). The key is doing it responsibly. A tool this powerful needs guardrails, and those of us who know how to use it right need to lead by example.

But, of course, life isn’t all AI breakthroughs and shiny awards. This year’s backdrop of political unrest, both in Europe and across the pond in the US, has been deeply unsettling. It feels like every time you open a news app, there’s a new crisis brewing. The poor economic outlook, particularly in the UK, has added to the gloom, casting long shadows over businesses and households alike. And then there’s the tidal wave of disinformation. It’s like the Hydra of our times—cut one head off, and two more fake stories pop up. Some days, it feels like we’re trying to patch a sinking boat with duct tape and good intentions.

Here’s the thing, though: I’ve learned this year just how important it is to have an escape. For me, that’s my family and our home tucked away in the middle of Tolkien country. When the world’s noise gets too loud, there’s nothing better than recharging with them.

And then there’s rugby. Reffing has been my secret weapon. There’s no room to dwell on AI or geopolitics when you’re on the pitch, the sole person stopping 30 giants from turning into an unsanctioned fight club. It’s chaotic, intense, and absolutely exhilarating. Plus, it gives me great stories.

So, as I wave goodbye to 2024, here’s my takeaway: balance matters. Use tech for good, find your escape, and always keep a sense of humour. Oh, and don’t forget—this blog was written by ChatGPT Enterprise. Even that last sentence. The future is already here.
