Semiconductor Industry Soars to New Heights in 2024
The semiconductor industry is experiencing a robust recovery, fueled by the surging demand for high-end computing hardware driven by the growth of artificial intelligence (AI). Recent market indicators have been overwhelmingly positive, signalling a turnaround after a period of stagnation in the early half of 2022. According to the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), global sales reached an impressive $48 billion in November, marking both an annual and quarterly rise for the first time in recent memory.
The SIA's World Semiconductor Trade Statistics division is optimistic about the industry's trajectory, projecting substantial growth in 2024, with global sales expected to reach an impressive $588 billion. This surge in demand can be attributed to significant investments from cloud services providers, who are expanding their capacities for AI applications. High-bandwidth memory (HBM) and Speedy DD45 DRAM chips are particularly sought after, driving prices upward.
AI's Expanding Role and Exciting Trends
As AI continues to evolve, experts anticipate its increased role in behind-the-scenes aspects of business operations. The innovation across industries, promises of improved connectivity, chip breakthroughs, and advancements in AI and quantum computing are set to redefine how work is done in 2024.
The growth of AI is already evident in applications like ChatGPT, but its impact is expected to extend beyond conversation and into sectors such as wireless networking and data processing, promising substantial improvements in efficiency.
Cloud Computing Dominance and GPU Demand
The cloud computing space is witnessing significant growth, with key players such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure leading the way. This surge has driven demand for Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) and HBM markets, prompting manufacturers to prioritize high-margin products and providers to secure sufficient capacity.
Quantum Computing's Quiet Revolution
While not making headlines, quantum computing has quietly made substantial strides in recent years. Experts believe that 2024 will be the year it moves beyond theory and starts impacting real-world businesses, signalling a paradigm shift in computational capabilities.
Semiconductor Industry Outlook and Investments
The chip industry is poised for a robust year, driven by ongoing production cuts in the memory market. Experts project a 13-18 % spike in DRAM contract prices in the first half of the year, with high-speed DDR5 components experiencing increased demand.
Legacy chips continue to be in demand, particularly in the automotive, defence, aerospace, and healthcare sectors. A notable development is the Commerce Department award of $162 million to Microchip Technology, aiming to increase legacy chip production at two U.S fabs. This investment is crucial for reducing reliance on rival countries like those in Asia.
Global Investments and Expansions
The United States is actively participating in the semiconductor industry's expansion, with New York entering the scene by partnering to build a $10 billion advanced chip facility in Albany. Existing players like Onsemi, GlobalFoundries, Wolfspeed, and the upcoming Micron fab in Syracuse showcase the state's commitment to chip manufacturing.
China, too, is aggressively pursuing its domestic chip industry, attracting numerous projects through government incentives and state-backed investment funds. According to the SEMI World Fab Forecast, China is set to lead all nations in semiconductor expansions in 2024, with 18 fabs expected to come online out of 42 global projects.
Despite China's dominance, the rest of the world is not lagging. SEMI's World Fab Forecast predicts a robust 6.4% increase in global chip capacity in 2024, reflecting the growing importance of semiconductors across industries. This growth follows a 5.5% uptick in 2023, with nearly four times more new fabs scheduled to open this year, reaching an impressive 30 million wafer starts per month.
In conclusion, 2024 is shaping up to be a pivotal year for the semiconductor industry, characterized by innovation, expansion, and a global race to meet the escalating demand for cutting-edge technology. As humanity reaches new milestones in wafer starts, the semiconductor industry continues to play a critical role in shaping the future of technology across diverse sectors.
