2024: That's a Wrap

2024: That's a Wrap

As the year winds down, I find myself reflecting on the achievements and milestones that have marked 2024. It's a moment to pause, appreciate the journey, and express my gratitude to everyone who has been part of it.

A New Venture: Aspect Chambers

One of the standout moments this year was launching Aspect Chambers . Starting a business, especially one involving office space, is no small feat. Thankfully, embarking on this journey with my partner in life and now in business, Kylie Hillard , made it that that much more enjoyable.

Our vision for Aspect Chambers began three years ago, and this year, it came to life with a fresh approach to the traditional barrister chambers. We emphasised creating common spaces that foster flexibility and offer a relaxing social environment for barristers, lawyers, and clients. The feedback from visitors and social events has been overwhelmingly positive.

As we approach our first anniversary, we couldn’t be more proud.

Delivering Excellence: Hansen Yuncken

This year also marks three years at Hansen Yuncken , one of Australia's longest-running construction companies. As a VDC Manager, I get to work with with a talented team to develop and maintain our technology, standards, and processes.

We've achieved so much this year, and even though I wasn’t able to present these accomplishments at any events, my VDC colleagues did an outstanding job across Autodesk University, BiLT, and various Autodesk events. A huge thank you to Christopher Rossetto , Nathan Taylor , Reana Maglis , and George Darroch . And for the support from Daniel Smith and Rexine Jones GAICD MBA .

Moreover, the completed projects I've been part of this year have been diverse, and include Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology Stage 2, the University of Queensland Plant Futures Facility, and the Paradise Gardens Shopping Village. Each of these projects were significantly different from each other, and contained some unique learning experiences.

Staying Engaged: Embracing Technology

I remain active in the client software side, whether it's helping others, providing product feedback, or engaging with the LinkedIn community. Here’s a brief overview:

  • Autodesk Construction Cloud : It's been fantastic to experience its growth, and to partner with its product managers, UX designers, and of course our amazing local Autodesk account team. In case you missed it, I did a Top-5 features of 2024 the other day.
  • DroneDeploy : My fascination with reality capture continues to grow, simply for the many opportunities it brings to practically any stage of a construction project. I truely appreciate our local account team's support this year.
  • Autodesk Tandem : Though smaller than the ACC team, their product releases and support never fail to impressive. Applying Tandem to the Aspect Chambers office has been a valuable experience, while being able to share learning insights with the community through a fortnightly #TandemTip Tuesday release.

Looking Ahead: A Personal Project

Even though the year is not quite over, I've had a personal project on simmer in the background for the last 6 months. I've been chipping away at it with some light R&D, designs, and prototyping. I'm eager to give this some greater attention over the end of year break.

Without giving anything away, I will say that it is related to 3D printing. The advancements in 3D printing technology are opening some exciting opportunities, and I believe I can see a niche fit in architecture and construction. I’m eager to delve deeper into this as a personal research project.

Thank you for being part of my 2024 journey. Here’s to more in the coming year!
